U.S. Route 17 in Virginia runs north-south through the eastern part of the state, serving the Hampton Roads area and Fredericksburg before ending in Winchester.

US 17 was defined in 1926. At that time, it ended in Fredericksburg. US 17 followed the following state routes:
- State Route 40, North Carolina to Portsmouth
- State Route 39, Newport News to Lee Hall
- State Route 514, Lee Hall to Yorktown
- State Route 29, Gloucester Point to Shacklefords
- State Route 30, Shacklefords to Saluda
- State Route 38, Saluda to Fredericksburg (SR 38 continued southeast beyond Saluda to Bayside and northwest to Opal)

[edit] Bridges
- The James River between Newport News and Isle of Wight County, Virginia on the James River Bridge, a drawbridge which was formerly a toll bridge but is now toll-free, concurrent with U.S. Route 258.
- The York River between Gloucester County and York County at Yorktown, Virginia on the George P. Coleman Bridge, a drawbridge which is also a toll bridge.
- The Rappahannock River between Stafford County and Spotsylvania County at Fredericksburg, Virginia as it overlaps Interstate 95.
