From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
U.S.S. Mariner is a sports-based blog that focuses on the Seattle Mariners, a Major League Baseball team. It was created in 2002 by authors Derek Zumsteg, David Cameron and Jason Michael Barker. The site features a mixture of sabermetrics and scouting information in analysis of the team.
Zumsteg, a Seattle native, is the author of The Cheater's Guide to Baseball [1] as well as a former contributing author of the baseball annual and website Baseball Prospectus. He also wrote a weekly "Off the Wall" column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2005 and has had his fiction work published on Escape Pod
Cameron has written extensively for Baseball Prospectus, The Hardball Times and various other publications, both on-line and in print. He is also a scheduled weekly guest of "The Groz" on KJR AM radio in Seattle, WA at 2:20 pm every Friday.
Barker is the creator of the Cooking with Jason blog and was previously a contributor to Grand Salami Magazine and StrikeThree.com.
Among the notable accomplishments of the site:
- Coining the nickname "King Felix" for the Seattle Mariners pitching phenomenon Félix Hernández.
- An "open letter" to Mariners' pitching coach Rafael Chaves about Hernandez's pitch selection that was cited as an influence in Hernandez altering his pitch selection. [2]
