Brothers John and Shawn Powe were raised in Lansing, Michigan, and began singing together with John Clay and Demetrius Peete in college as an a cappella vocal group.[1] The group moved to Detroit, where a single, "Something's Goin' On", received airplay on radio station WJLB and became a local hit.[1] Signing to Maverick Records, the group released two albums, in 1993 and 1995; meanwhile, "Something's Goin' On" became the first and most successful of several nationwide hits.
