In 2006, it was reported that Rick Rubin worked with U2 on new material for their next album in the south of France, which produced two new songs entitled The Saints Are Coming and Window In The Skies, both of which have been played on the recent 2006 Vertigo Tour and appeared on the band's latest Best of album, U218 Singles, alongside 16 other "hits".

On September 12, 2006 it was reported on the official U2 website that the band was working on a new album in Abbey Road Studios.[3] Describing the possible direction of the album, Bono has said "We're gonna continue to be a band, but maybe the rock will have to go; maybe the rock has to get a lot harder. But whatever it is, it's not gonna stay where it is..."[4] In the December 2006 issue of Q Magazine, The Edge said that the band is pursuing melodic songs. In December 2007, Bono announced in an interview that the new album will include trance influences and a "dancefloor shock." According to Bono, "There's some trance influences. But there's some very hardcore guitar coming out of The Edge. Real molten metal. It's not like anything we've ever done before, and we don't think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either."[5]

Speaking at Midem 2008, Paul McGuinness had said that the new album should be released in October 2008.[1]

Daniel Lanois told RTE Radio on 4 June 2008 the album should be ready to rock and roll in three to four weeks. "We're just finishing the vocals. Bono's in great form, singing fantastic," he says. Lanois adds this opinion of the album: "I think we can safely say it's one of the great, innovative records from U2." [1]
