Talk:U-Con

Response to Speedy Deletion Tag:
- U-Con is a long running gaming convention, around since 1988
- U-Con has hosted, at one time or another, some of the most influential people in US gaming: Ed Greenwood, Richard Garfield, and others. I am working to retrieve a complete list.

- Are there articles about U-Con from independent sources that can be used as references? As a fellow gaming geek, I'm not eager to see the article deleted, but it still has to meet the guidelines. --Finngall talk 17:18, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

- I have to admit, User:Finngall, I'm shocked that you tagged a firstarticle by a new editor for speedy deletion within three minutes of when it was posted. That seems positively unfriendly. I just re-read the policies for maintenance and they all suggest being more friendly and kind than this. If your point is lack of references rather than demonstration of significance, you should put a verify and/or stub tag on it instead of speedydeletion. This is the first time I've seen such aggressive admin action and it doesn't seem appropriate. Netmouse 17:36, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Netmouse
- Article clearly does not meet the cited criteria for quick deletion (the article *does* claim significance for the event it's about), so I have removed that tag and the associated "wait" tag. The request for independent citations looks reasonable to me, can we perhaps proceed along those lines rather than instantly asking for expedited deletion? Dd-b 17:47, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

- On one hand, I freely admit to being a little quick on the trigger with the tags at times. On the other, I do not have sufficient psychic ability to predict what is going to be in an article for purposes of determining whether it meets Wikipedia's guidelines. At the time I tagged it, it said little more than "It's a gaming convention". The article has improved, references were provided, and I would have gladly withdrawn the speedy tag myself if you hadn't beaten me to it.

- With regard to newbies and new articles in general: I regularly patrol the list of new pages looking for articles that meet the criteria for speedy deletion. If the article meets those criteria, it doesn't matter how experienced the author is. I notify the user of what I've done, which is more than many folks do, the articles stay on my watchlist until an admin's decision is made one way or the other, and I'd like to think I'm pretty good about answering questions from users. On one hand, no, we shouldn't bite the newbies, and we should encourage their good work. On the other, I don't think it's unreasonable for new users to do more reading up on policies and procedures before creating new articles than they seem to do now.

- I admit I create the framework of the page, and wanted to dig around for sources before putting up more info. I appreciate your thorough evaluation! Is there any kind of new user guide on wikipedia? Sorcycat 18:51, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

I've added a lot of prior guests of honor, and corrected the length of the convention, based on a collection of old UCon convention books and other materials. This information is accurate, but I don't know how to cite it.
Also, the 1989 convention book states that it's the first year of UCon. As a long-time UCon officer and repeated Chair, and an attendee way back, I've always heard the 1988 thing and that it came out of a con with a different name... but it's interesting to see it stated that way.

Sorry, forgot to "sign" that. 71.124.51.208 21:37, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Last message of rec.games.frp.announce advertises U-con 1996. Also includes the former website (http://www.deathstar.org/~ucon), which altered recently.
Lists U-con 1998.
Suggests playtesting Gutshot at U-con 2002, and also notes that U-con was founded in 1988, referring to U-con's own website.
Fun con - but I haven't made it to U-con for some time. Hope these help.
