[edit] History

Tyrrelstown is often incorrectly spelt as Tyrellstown or even Tyrrellstown. It derives its name from that of the Tyrrell family, who were granted the lands in the parishes of Clonsilla and Mulhuddart in 1178 by the Norman, Hugh DeLacy.[1] Historically Tyrrelstown is part of the Barony of Castleknock, which had its focal point at Castleknock Castle; much of the area's history is intertwined with that of Cruiserath, Castleknock, Mulhuddart and other adjacent places. To the south there is Tyrrelstown House, a listed building dating back to 1720.[2]

[edit] Location

Tyrrelstown is located South of Hollystown Golf Course, North of Mulhuddart, to the West of Cruiserath and set between the Navan Road (N3) and Ashborne Road (N2).

Located nearby is Damastown Industrial Estate, one of Dublin's largest industrial estates, which includes a large IBM campus employing over 4,000 people. Also in nearby Cruiserath, there are premises for the pharmaceutical corporation Bristol-Myers Squibb; beyond that is Blanchardstown Corporate Park which features offices belonging to PayPal, Ask.Com, and WeLocalize, a multinational Software Localization company.

[edit] Local Amenities

A new retail area known as Tyrrelstown Town Centre opened on November 24th, 2005 and has been created as part of the recent housing developments to cater to the local inhabitants. A 4-star luxury Park Plaza hotel was opened in 2006 leading the way for a retail park, which will contain over 200,000 square feet (20,000 m²) of shopping facilities. Other local amenities include a national school (an 'Educate Together' school), a creche, a Lidl supermarket, a Superquinn supermarket, a newsagent, a pub, an off-licence, a restaurant, several fast food outlets, a pharmacy, two medical centres, a dental practice, a coffee shop, and a hairdressers and barber shop.

There is also a local football (soccer) team called Tyrrelstown FC, which currently has 2 senior teams playing in the AUL as well as 2 schoolboy teams playing in the DDSL.

[edit] Transportation

Tyrrelstown is served primarily by the 38C and 40D Dublin Bus routes. A new N2 - N3 link road is being built. By road it is accessible via Mulhuddart, Hollystown and Cruiserath.

[edit] Developers

Tyrrelstown was created by Dublin property company TwinLite Developments and launched in 2001. Other development companies involved include McInerney Construction, Kranok Construction and Merville Homes. Originally the site was zoned for a landfill that was scrapped; the town now hosts over 4,000 inhabitants and is set to expand further.
