Tyrone Marshall (born November 12, 1974 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican footballer, who plays center back for Toronto FC of Major League Soccer.
Marshall was drafted by the Colorado Rapids out of Florida International University in Miami, Florida, with the 11th overall pick of the 1998 MLS College Draft. He played only one game for Colorado, then was dealt to the Miami Fusion midway through the season. Marshall would spend the next three and a half seasons in Miami, starting as a forward and eventually drifting to the midfield and then the defense.
After the Fusion folded, Marshall was picked up by the Los Angeles Galaxy with the ninth pick of the 2002 MLS Allocation Draft, helping LA to the 2002 MLS Cup. He was traded to Toronto FC for Edson Buddle on 13 June 2007 after 5+ seasons with the Galaxy. Marshall cemented his place in Toronto's defence, and went on to make 16 starts during the 2007 season. Marshall managed to get revenge on his former side when Toronto earned their first win of the 2008 season in Los Angeles.
Marshall is also a regular with the Jamaican national team.
[edit] Controversy
On June 13, 2007 Marshall was suspended three games and fined $1,500 for serious foul play in a game on June 9. Marshall, then playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy, received a red card for a tackle on FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper in the 89th minute. The red card carries a mandatory one-game suspension and $250 fine, but the MLS Disciplinary Committee decided unanimously to further sanction Marshall's action, adding two additional games of suspension and an additional fine of $1,250. Cooper's leg was broken on the play. [1]
