Tyrone House

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tyrone House was described in the Bulletin of the Irish Georgian Society 1976: Volume XIX JUL-DEC: Tyrone House, (Kilcolgan) County Galway by Gordon St. George Mark.

Since this was published the house has deteriorated[citation needed], but still stands on the estuary of the Kilcolgan River.

The house was destroyed by the local IRA unit during the Irish War of Independence. Its dominant position, visible from large tracts of South Galway, made it a candidate as a base of operations for the Black and Tans.
