[edit] Background
The desire to create an obedient super soldier lies at the core of Resident Evil’s story line. Following the discovery of the Progenitor Virus, the Umbrella corporation’s founders, with the exception of Edward Ashford, become eager to create a bioweapon that is both powerful and capable of following orders. Prior to the events of Resident Evil Zero, Umbrella used the Progenitor Virus to create the T-Virus, which they believe can be used to manufacture powerful organisms. A problem with the virus’ compatibility with humans set the project back, as only humans with a very rare genetic makeup are capable of mutating into potent and manageable life forms. Umbrella eventually overcame this setback by resorting to using clones of Sergei Vladimir,[1] one of their executives who happened to be genetically compatible.
The events of the Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil chronicle the Umbrella Corporation's development of a functional super soldier, known as a Tyrant. Though the early Tyrants are defeated in their first encounters, Umbrella manages to use the battle data from those defeats to produce other, more efficient Tyrants in the later installments of Resident Evil. An unintended consequence of the Tyrant experiments in the Arklay Mountains leads to the accidental release of the T-Virus in Raccoon City, which sets up the storyline for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
[edit] Characteristics
Numerous Tyrants have been created throughout Resident Evil’s story line, each with its own defining characteristics. The games' creators have consistently depicted Tyrants as brutal, grotesque, and violent creatures. Additionally, the intelligence of Tyrants has varied; the first two Tyrants in Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil were depicted as unintelligent, while Nemesis and Mr. X were shown to possess some intelligence and the ability to carry out specific instructions. Tyrants also possess phenomenal strength; they may actually be the strongest creatures in the Resident Evil series. With the exception of Nemesis, each Tyrant has shown itself to be capable of destroying any object in its path with a single hit.
The weapons used by Tyrants have also varied. While most Tyrants in the Resident Evil series relied on sheer physical force to subdue opponents, Nemesis was able to use a rocket launcher. Other Tyrants, like the T-091, T-092, T-078 Tyrants from the Resident Evil: Dead Aim and Resident Evil: Code Veronica games were able to utilize tentacles, energy attacks, and battering rams.

[edit] Standard Tyrants
- T-001 Tyrant/Proto-Tyrant an experimental subject, served as the prototype for the later Tyrants. While the Proto-Tyrant was scheduled to be destroyed, it somehow escaped and went on a rampage, and while classified as a failure, it was nonetheless a powerful opponent. Unlike its successors, the T-001's spinal column was exposed due to its mutations, leaving it extremely vulnerable to small-arms fire from behind. Furthermore, its nervous system was more primitive than its successors, leading to the Proto-Tyrant's primitive behavior and lack of coordination. This Tyrant was defeated twice by Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen in the course of Resident Evil Zero, and later killed by Albert Wesker during the Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles scenario "Beginnings".
- T-002 Tyrant served as a precursor to the T-103 models and was created within the depths of the Arklay Research Facility. During the events of Resident Evil, Albert Wesker ordered the Tyrant to slay the remaining members of Raccoon City’s S.T.A.R.S.; instead, it attacked Wesker and left him for dead. The remaining S.T.A.R.S. members engaged the Tyrant in battle before escaping the facility. Although it had exceptional fighting capabilities, Umbrella didn't intend to mass produce it, instead using this model as base to improve upon.
- T-103 Tyrant, also known as Mr. X, the first mass produced Tyrant, was created on Umbrella’s Sheena Island facility. They were originally created by one of the ten clones of Sergei Vladimir, a compatible subject for the tyrant program. They were then later mass-produced by using a specific chemical secretion found within kidnapped children's frontal lobes on test subjects, and then traditionally giving a direct dosage of the T-virus into the subject. They were first deployed during the events of Resident Evil 2 during the Raccoon City Incident. One (T-00) was dispatched to the R.P.D on a mission to recover the G-Virus from William Birkin, a rogue Umbrella scientist, as well as to dispose of any remaining survivors. The remaining five (T01-T05) were dispatched to the Dead Factory, tasked with cleaning up a US special forces platoon that were on a mission to retrieve the G-virus for the US government. Unlike their predecessors, these Tyrants are known for their near-human appearance. They exhibit no visible mutations like the huge talons prominently featured on earlier models. This changes, however, if the T-103 suffers serious injury, after which it will mutate and display the features seen in other Tyrants. The T-103 model could also be programmed to achieve specific goals, such as the acquisition of the G-Virus sample contained within Sherry Birkin's pendent. The T-103 was Umbrella's most successful tyrant line, becoming the basis for many derivatives, including the Ivan, T-A.L.O.S and 0400TP tyrants.
- T-078 Tyrant, a mass-produced T-103 Tyrant that was shipped to Rockfort Island, was specially produced to serve training purposes with Umbrella’s special forces. It is characterized by its blunted claws, which act as battering rams, and the fact that, unlike most other Tyrants, it doesn't have a weak spot. This Tyrant bears unmistakable resemblances to the T-103 model, which it is, albeit with further experimentation to improve upon it's training purposes. It was delivered to Rockfort Island by none other than Umbrella Special Forces agent, HUNK. It was defeated by Claire after she launched it out of a plane together with a large box of high-power explosives.
- 'T-091 Tyrant', this tyrant was the first attempt at creating a tyrant with the T-G virus. It was deemed a failure due to the lack of an electrical current, which the T-G virus was designed to produce. It also suffered from an exposed major organ, making it more vulnerable to attacks. Unlike most other tyrants, in place of claws, the T-091 grew tentacles. All problems that arose with the T-091 model were all remedied by the T-092.
- Pluto is actually one of Umbrella's failed experiments. Once a prisoner known as Alpha, Pluto developed large amounts of fat instead of musculature. Its eyes were removed, so it guides itself by sound. Large, greenish, and surprisingly agile despite its bulk, Pluto eventually escaped confinement, and met its demise at the hands of Bruce McGivern during Resident Evil: Dead Aim.
- T-092 Tyrant, a rare Tyrant that inhabited the Spencer Rain, this tyrant is actually Morpheus, after injecting himself with the T-G virus. Unlike the T-091 Tyrant, This Tyrant successfully maintained an electrical current, giving it the ability to become practically invulnerable to everything besides an anti-electrical current weapon specifically designed to be used against it. This Tyrant, and to an extent, Morpheus himself, spontaneously changed sex after transformation. Breasts have developed, as well as an overall female facial structure and figure. The T-092 was later defeated and destroyed by McGivern in Resident Evil: Dead Aim.
- T-092 Tyrant Mutation, after being defeated by Bruce McGivern, the effects of the G-virus in the T-G virus mixture becomes dominant, prolonging the subject's life at the expense of ravenous, uncontrollable mutations. Like William Birkin in Resident Evil 2, Morpheus grows to enormous mass, resembling nothing more than a huge blob of flesh that gets bigger as time passes. Its enormous mass soon causes it to explode along with the self-destruction sequence for the island, ending its life.
[edit] Specialized Tyrants
- Nemesis T-Type, a new breed of Tyrant was the result of years of biological experimentation with Lisa Trevor. With the Ne-alpha, a parasite that was created from the Ne-T virus in conjunction with the original Tyrant project, that was created by the Umbrella branch in Paris. The original Nemesis project had four subjects, all of which were T-103s. One of the originals tried to escape and was destroyed and inhibitors were put on the remaining three. These were called Nemesis T-02 Type. Unlike other Tyrants, the Nemesis is characterized by its tentacles, increased intelligence, and limited speech. Nemesis seems to have less physical strength than other Tyrants, as it has shown itself to be incapable of breaking through walls or reinforced doors without applying multiple hits to them, and often enters structures through windows instead. However, this is more than made up for by Nemesis's extreme level of resistance to damage, allowing Nemesis to recover from any injury and continue to relentlessly pursue its prey regardless of the amount of damage done to its body.
- Hypnos T-Type, a special Tyrant native to Sheena Island, was characterized by its array of overgrown muscles. Doctor Klein created the Hypnos Tyrant by implanting modified cells into a normal host’s body, in an attempt to cause the stronger cells to reproduce and take over the others. The Hypnos Tyrant features a more primitive appearance as opposed to the other Tyrants. The only known Hypnos Tyrant was destroyed during the events of Resident Evil Survivor.
- T-0400TP, another variation of the T-103, was programmed to protect humans rather than harming them, through the use of neurological inhibitors. Due to the Tyrant’s natural biological and mental instabilities, it developed an infamous reputation for betraying its client. As seen in Resident Evil Outbreak File #2, if a T-0400TP Tyrant manages to remove its inhibitors, it will undergo a mutation very similar to that of the T-103 model but will also manage to produce more mass and become resistant to rockets, unlike the T-103.
- Thanatos Tyrant, an experimental breed of Tyrant, which gained an infamous reputation for managing to kill several members of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service with ease. During the events of Resident Evil Outbreak, Greg Mura, a rogue Umbrella Corporation scientist, released Thanatos to show his disapproval for the mass-produced Tyrant project. Thanatos is easily recognized by its agility, brute force, and speed.
- Thanatos-R, a mutation of the Thanatos Tyrant, characterized by its elongated and flexible left arm. The Thanatos Tyrant mutated after sustaining critical damage from the Raccoon City University's destruction. In order to compensate for the loss of its right arm, Thanatos-R's left arm and upper body experienced a prodigious amount of growth. The "R" in Thanatos' name is short for the word "Rebirth".
- T-103 Ivan, a specially re-engineered derivation of the T-103 Tyrant line, was created by Sergei Vladimir to serve as his personal bodyguards[2]. Its basic combat functionality is that of a T-103, but it has been modified to better assimilate into human society. In addition to the trademark T-103 defensive coat, this model is also equipped with colored sunglasses that include a head-mounted display. Major improvements with this model include greater powers of comprehension and the ability to pass as human. It is still a T-103 and as such, can transform into a similar-looking Tyrant when the situation calls for it. Utterly loyal to Sergei, they have twice been tasked with killing Albert Wesker, once at the Arklay Training Facility in 1998, and again in Umbrella's Russian base of operations, attacking in a pair. Both attempts were unsuccessful.
- T-A.L.O.S, (Tyrant Armored Lethal Organic System), was inspired by the Nemesis and designed to be Umbrella's most sophisticated and dangerous bio-weapon. Unlike the Nemesis, the Talos is regulated not by a parasite but by digital chips which allow a supercomputer like the Red Queen to directly control it. It is heavily armed with military-grade weapons and armor, and has outperformed everything from armored vehicles to attack helicopters. Talos was originally conceived by the team stationed at the Arklay Research Facility, but was recovered by Sergei Vladimir before the facility's destruction and completed in secret at Umbrella's stronghold in southern Russia. It was defeated by Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine in Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles.
[edit] Non-Canon Tyrants
- B.O.W. Tyrant, was the name given to the Tyrant that was supposed to be killed by Barry Burton and Leon S. Kennedy aboard the Starlight Cruiser in the Game Boy game Resident Evil Gaiden. It has a similar appearance and attacks to the T-103, but it has tentacles protruding from its stomach. However Resident Evil 4 has proven the events of Gaiden to be non-canon.
- T-104 Tyrant, a variation of the T-103, was characterized by its purple complexion and protruding facial horns. While the T-104 was more powerful and dexterous than the T-103, it lacked adequate endurance. The T-104 tyrant was only seen in the "Showdown 3" scenario in Resident Evil Outbreak: File 2.
- Dr. Sam Isaacs, In Resident Evil: Extinction, Dr. Isaacs mutates into a Tyrant. As a Tyrant, Issacs possessed a mass of tentacles instead of a right arm, had accelerated healing to the point of near-instantaneous recovery from wounds, telekinetic abilities, the ability of speech and possessed Issacs' intelligence and memories.
