Tyrael, an archangel, is one of the main characters seen in the popular game Diablo II. He is depicted as an angel whose face is hidden by the darkness of his hood and never revealed throughout the game. He has large tendril-like white-glowing wings and is garbed in brown and gold robes. (In the game's various cinematic sequences, he is also at times depicted wearing armor over his robes.)
Tyrael is one of only three named angels shown in the game; Hadriel is found in the River of Flame, in Act IV, on the player's path to destroy Diablo, and Izual is a former (corrupted) archangel.

[edit] Tyrael's Role in the Mythos
Tyrael (pronounced "Tear-ial," as Marius enunciates in the cutscene "Terror's End.") comes from the High Heavens and serves "The Light", the forces of good in the Diablo universe. It is unknown who his superiors are; no gods or higher angels are ever named. Judging from Deckard Cain's description, Tyrael seems to be regarded as something of a rogue by the forces of Heaven, as he seems to intervene in the affairs of mankind more frequently than is considered appropriate. This would seem to explain Tyrael's greater sociability, compared to Hadriel, as well as his willingness to single-handedly engage one of the Prime Evils directly.
The manual for the original Diablo game establishes that Tyrael was the patron of the Horadrim several centuries prior to the games, during the Sin War. He united mages, warriors, and other typically dysfunctional factions into a single force dedicated to binding the Prime Evils.
[edit] Tyrael's role in the game
Tyrael guides the player throughout the fourth Act and makes an appearance in Act V.
The player first meets Tyrael in Tal-Rasha's Chamber in Act II, where he has been imprisoned by Diablo and Baal. The player frees him and Tyrael urges the player to hurry to Kurast in pursuit of them, then vanishes. Previously, images of Tyrael are projected briefly through Marius' hallucinations superimposed over a mysterious cloaked figure.
Tyrael appears in the cinematic at the end of Act II. Tyrael intends to stop Marius and the Dark Wanderer (Diablo in disguise) from freeing Baal, who is imprisoned within the mage Tal Rasha. While Tyrael engages Diablo directly (even with his powers watered down, Diablo is almost a match), Marius frees Baal by removing the Soulstone from his chest. A furious Tyrael then instructs Marius to take the soulstone to the Temple of Light, in the Eastern City of Kurast, to enter the gate to Hell located there, and to destroy the stone in the Hellforge. The sequence seems to imply that Tyrael has a special ability akin to stopping time - however, after the sequence, Marius ends up near the exit of Tal-Rasha's Tomb, thus implying that Tyrael also teleported him there somehow, because in the end Tyrael is still battling Baal and Diablo.
Having been released, Baal rescues his brother from the archangel. Tyrael attempts to contain him with force, but Baal knocks away Tyrael's sword. Tyrael is overpowered by Baal and Diablo. They escape and imprison Tyrael within the Tal-Rasha's tomb, where he remains until the player comes and frees him. Marius follows Tyrael's instructions and runs.
Tyrael appears in the Pandemonium Fortress in Act 4 as an NPC. He gives the "Fallen Angel" quest, where the player has to slay the fallen angel Izual, as well as giving the reward for this Quest. After the hero (player) has completed the "Hell's Forge" quest granted by Cain, Tyrael sends the player to the final climactic battle with the Lord of Terror. In later versions of the game, Tyrael also offers to resurrect the player's mercenary companion when it dies.
During the end of Act 5, Tyrael destroys the Worldstone in order to prevent Baal from corrupting it any further. He claims that this will prevent the forces of hell from flooding into the mortal world - by destroying the Worldstone, its uncorrupted energies will be released and spread throughout the world of Sanctuary, thus maintaining the boundaries between Sanctuary, the High Heavens, and Hell. Although there has been no official information regarding Diablo 3, it is possible that Tyrael and the consequences of the Worldstone's destruction will play a major role.
