Typhoon Gay

The name Gay has been used for five tropical cyclones in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

  • 1981's Typhoon Gay (1981 TY 24) - A Category 2 typhoon that weakened to a Category 1 before brushing the eastern coast of Japan in October 1981.
  • 1985's Typhoon Gay (1985 TY 03W) - A Category 3 Typhoon that remained well off the coast of Japan in May 1985.
  • 1988's Tropical Storm Gay (1988 TS 13W) - A minimal Tropical Storm that stayed well out to sea in September 1988.
  • 1989's Typhoon Gay (1989 TY 32W) - A Severe Tropical Cyclone that struck Thailand as a Category 3 typhoon in the Western Pacific Basin. After that, Gay crossed into the Indian Ocean Basin becoming a Category 5 Cyclone just prior to striking India in November 1989.
  • 1992's Super Typhoon Gay (1992 STY 31W) - A Category 5 Super Typhoon that peaked at 190 mph, which made it the strongest Western Pacific Basin storm since Typhoon Tip in 1979. Gay went on to threaten Guam as a significant Typhoon, only to weaken greatly from interaction with Typhoon Hunt. Typhoon Gay weakened rapidly before striking Guam with winds of 100 mph, still a Category 2 Typhoon.
