In NSA terminology, a Type 3 algorithm is an encryption algorithm that has been adopted as a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for use with Sensitive, But Unclassified (SBU) information on non national security systems. Examples include DES, Triple DES and AES (although AES might also be usable in NSA-certified Type 1 products).
