Category:Tyne and Wear Museums

Tyne and Wear Museums is a grouping of museums in the north east of England. They have been administered by a joint board of local authorities since the abolition of the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County Council. They receive additional financial support from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The museums in each local authority area are:

  • Gateshead: Shipley Art Gallery (founded 1917)
  • Newcastle: Discovery Museum (founded 1934); Hancock Museum (founded 1829); Laing Art Gallery (founded 1901)
  • North Tyneside: Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum (founded 2000); Stephenson Railway Museum (founded 1986)
  • South Tyneside: Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum (founded 1953); South Shields Museum & Art Gallery (founded 1876)
  • Sunderland: Monkwearmouth Station Museum (founded 1973); Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens (founded 1846); Washington F Pit (founded 1976)
