TV.com summary

Ty Murray's Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge is a six-episode American celebrity reality television show on CMT in which nine celebrities from across the board spend 10 days learning how to ride bulls with retired rodeo star Ty Murray for the PBR Jack Daniels Invitational in Nashville. Cody Lambert, also well known in the rodeo world, aids Murray in the training of the stars and handles the bulls. Ty's girlfriend Jewel, who lives at his ranch, also makes frequent appearances and encourages the potential riders. The premiere and final episodes are 1 hour long, with the remaining four episodes spanning 30 minutes. The show will also be aired on VH1.

Unlike most reality shows, Ty Murray's Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge is not a competition where the celebrities compete against one another. Instead, they are working as a team to encourage one another and to get as many to the final event as possible.

The stars are training at Ty's ranch and 4 C's Bucking Bulls & Training Facility, both in Stephenville, Texas, while staying at the Quail Ridge Ranch. Each celebrity was allowed to choose the bulls for their final ride from nine level seven PBR bulls. For ten days Ty, Cody, and various other bull riders will teach the stars how proper chute procedure, how to mount the bulls, how to fall and get out of the bull's path, and how to ride and hopefully hang on for eight full seconds. In the final episode, celebrities who still want to and that Ty gives the okay to will attempt an eight second ride on their chosen bull in Nashville.

# Title[1] Original airdate
1 "We Just Started and We're Already Losing Stars"  August 10, 2007
On the first day, introductions are made, then the celebrities got to meet the bulls and pick the ones they would ride at the end. The day finished with fitting the guys into their equipment and getting them settled into their quarters.

On day two, the group starts by learning some theory on the mechanical bull. They then head to an arena to learn proper chute procedure, chute safety, and how to get the rope position correctly. They then practice mounting and prepping their chosen bulls in the chutes. The day ends with Stephen Baldwin getting a hair cut from Vanilla Ice.

At the start of day three, Leif Garrett refuses to get out of bed due to back pain and drops out. The rest get to watch the 2005 PBR champion Justin McBride ride Blueberry Buckle, a level 30 bull that has never been ridden for eight seconds. The group then learns how to dismount and get out of the bull's path using Party Animal, a non-bucking bull. The first half of the group takes their first rides on level 1 bulls. Stephen Baldwin takes a bad fall on his ride and gets stepped on.
2 "A Concert by Jewel and Vanilla Ice"  August 17, 2007
Day 3 continues with the remaining celebrities doing their first rides. Stephen Baldwin heads to the hospital and is diagnosed with a broken shoulder bone and fractured rib in his fall. After the rides, the group heads into town to shop and socialize with the locals. Ty gives the group day four off to rest their muscles and takes them fishing. They end the day with a BBQ picnic where Stephen Baldwin lets them know he has to drop out and head home, but will rejoin them in Nashville to support the others. At the end of the night, Jewel agrees to perform "You Were Meant For Me" for the group when Vanilla Ice promises to follow up with a performance of "Ice Ice Baby." Clark and Ishmael join in as his backup dancers.
3 "The Injuries Are Adding Up"  August 24, 2007

The day starts with 19 year old Brian Canter, one of the smallest professional bull riders who is also fifth ranked in the PBR, doing a demonstration to show the group that brute strength is not a requirement for bull riding. Frank Newsome and Joe Baumgartner, two of the best professional bull fighters in the PBR, teach the riders more bull avoidance techniques using the wheelbarrow technique. The celebrities ride their first level 2 bulls with extra advice from Canter.

Johnny Fairplay forgets to let go of the bull during his ride, but is able to get away unscathed and stays on the whole eight seconds (plus 8 more hanging off the side). Francesco Quinn falls off, and does not let go quick enough, which causes the bull to turn at him mid-jump and land directly on his midsection with both front legs. The others lose their confidence causing Ty to end the day early. Quinn is diagnosed with a jagged broken rib near his lung in his back and has to drop out (along with two other fractured ribs). To end the day, the group goes to a local bar for drinks and socializing with the locals. A young man challenges Ismail to a foot race. Fairplay tries to ride the 20 foot high Moola sign in the town square.
4 "Vanilla Ice Gets Inked"  August 31, 2007

Ty tries to get the remaining celebrities spirits back up, with help from Quinn, who sticks around for morale encouragement, and Ismail, who is made team captain. PBR professional Ross Coleman, a top rider know for his larger size, does a demonstration as well. The group do another round of rides in preparation for exhibition rides in a crowded Stephenville arena. Clark strains his groin muscle and looks questionable for the event the next day and the Nashville event.

After the rides, the group rests and has dinner with Ty and Jewel. Van Winkle asks Ty for an autograph. Ty signs it "Never Weaken -- Ty Murray" which Van Winkle takes to a tattoo artist that night and has it tattooed to a bruise on his left thigh that he got during his ride. When asked why he did it, Van Winkle replied that Ty was his new hero and an all around great guy.[2]
5 "The First Big Test"  September 7, 2007

Francesco Quinn still wants to ride, but because of where the crack in one rib is, the medics refuse to approve it. Van Winkle's wife and kids come out to view the event in Stephenville. Clark decides to ride with his groin injury. The Stephenville event is their sixth lesson, to ride in front of an audience, using their practice bulls rather than the ones they will ride in Nashville. As team captain, Ismael gives the group a pep talk and takes the first ride.

Rocket Ismael rides for 7.5 seconds. Kenny Bartram does a perfect 8 second ride. Josh Haynes rides 6.8 seconds and wants to ride again. Johnny Fairplay's bull gets antsy in the chute. When he takes his ride and comes off, he gets stepped on but didn't get hurt. He rode 7.2 seconds. Dan Clark rides 8 seconds despite the groin injury. Robert Van Winkle rides 7.2 seconds. Ty let's Josh ride his practice bull, Lightening, again. On his second ride, he goes the full 8 seconds. After the ride, the group visits with the crowd and signs autographs.
6 "The Final Ride in Nashville"  September 14, 2007

One hour series finale. The remaining riders head to the PBR event at the Sommet Center to take their rides on the level seven bulls they choose in the first episode. The day before the ride, they go to the pre-event rider meeting with the 45 PBR riders that are actually competing in the feature event. Francesco Quinn visits with the PBR event doctors to see if he can still ride. The doctor's explain that because of the way his rib is fractured, a sudden turn could cause him to get a punctured rib and die, so he decides not to ride. Before their event, the group goes to watch the preceding event and get a feel for the 15,000 strong crowd and see the real pros riding high level bulls.

The group's families all come to Nashville to see the event and spend time together the morning before. Several also spend the morning at "Cowboy Church" where the other riders perform a group prayer over the celebrities. Two hours before the event, Ty takes them down to the bull pens and tells them that they are not ready for the level seven bulls they chose at the beginning and he puts them back down to level 2-3 bulls they had been practicing on. Josh Haynes is the only one doesn't agree and still wants to ride his chosen bull Satan's Own. Before their rides, quite a few professional rides come by the locker room and share tips with the celebrities. As promised, Stephen Baldwin returns to cheer on the guys. The final results, in the order they rode in:

  • Dan Clark, 6.9 seconds
  • Rocket Ismail, 3.9 seconds
  • Kenny Bartram, 4.4 seconds (bull stepped on his hand when he came off)
  • Josh Haynes, 4.1 second (came off head first and came within inches of having his head stomped)
  • Vanilla Ice, 4.4 seconds (bull stepped on his knee but nothing was broken or torn)
  • Johnny Fairplay, 8.1 seconds (after hitting the replay button after the clock reported 7.9)
At the end of the show, all eight riders were given belt buckles for sticking with it and making the attempts.
