The Two River Theater is an ultra-modern theater located on the Navesink River in Red Bank, New Jersey. It opened in April 2005 with a live taping of VH-1's "Storytellers" featuring Bruce Springsteen. It features performances of professional plays, as well as musicians.
The main theater seats 350 people, and features a modern lighting system. The futuristic lobby features 40-foot-high glass walls. The smaller Marion Huber Theater is also housed in the complex.
The Two River Theater Company was founded by Dr. Robert Rechnitz in 1995. Before the construction of the Theater, shows were held on the campus of Monmouth University and at the Algonquin Theatre in Manasquan, New Jersey. The Company's Aristic Director is Aaron Posner, formerly of Philadelphia's Arden Theatre. The Managing Director is Guy Gsell.
The 2006-2007 season included productions of Fats Waller's Ain't Misbehavin', a modern Texas setting of Molière's comedy Tartuffe, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play The Pavillion, directed by Posner, Sam Shepard's True West, directed by Robert Rechnitz, and Steve Martin's adaptation of The Underpants.
In January 2008, TRTC will premiere a new "horror show" version of Shakespeare's Macbeth, conceived and co-directred by Posner and Teller, (of Penn and Teller). The magic will be designed by Teller. The show is a co-production with the Folger Theater in Washington, DC. Other shows in the 2007-2008 season are "our Town", David Ives' "Mere Mortals", "The Glass Menagerie", and the original Mark Twain musical "A Murder, a Mystery, and a Marriage". In the Marion Huber Theater, TRTC will present Todd Robbins' "Charlatan's Sceance" and Laura Eason's World Premiere adaptation of Charles Dickens' "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain".
Making reference to popular music, Bon Jovi performed a two-hour set at the theatre in 2005 [1]. Bruce Springsteen filmed his VH1 Storytellers special at the theater, [2] which can be seen on his subsequent VH1 Storytellers DVD.
