The formula for the wave profile is u = m1exp( − | x − x1 | ) + m2exp( − | x − x2 | ). Certain PDEs, like the Camassa–Holm shallow water equation, allow solutions u(x,t) of this form, where the peakons' positions (x1, x2) and amplitudes (m1, m2) depend on time in a suitable way.
