Bay Parkway

Where did [1] create a red link? --NE2 21:53, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

On Bay Parkway itself. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 21:56, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Ah - that's because Template:Infobox road/NY Parkway shield calls Template:Infobox road/NY/shield Parkway. But why should the reference morker even be on Bay Parkway? It's definitely not a normal shield, and shouldn't be treated like one. --NE2 22:04, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
All articles on non-parkway reference routes in New York and on quadrant routes in Pennsylvania do the same thing, so you'll want to bring this issue up in a location where you can get wider feedback. I'll save my comments for that location. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 22:14, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

SC Infobox question

Hey TMF, I have an infobox question for you. I added an infobox road to the highway article SC 11. In the infobox there is starting and ending terminus. For this highway, it starts at a SC highway. I used the example from Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/South Carolina. In this example it started with a US highway. The code is this "subst:Infobox U.S. Route/quick|76|Columbia|South Carolina" How do I change this to reflect a SC route instead of a US route? Thanks Rocketmaniac (talk) 15:10, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't think there's a matching template for SC routes, or for any other state. You'll have to type the code in manually, unfortunately, using the examples shown in the junction parameter below it. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 23:01, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Maine_Turnpike_logo.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Maine_Turnpike_logo.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Dream out loud (talk) 04:02, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi! A quick question.

I recently edited West Virginia Route 5, adding a note about a part which was abandoned in the 1970's. I noticed that you removed a self reference to the Unused Highways in West Virginia page which described and provided a picture of the old roadway.

I think that the reference is important, as it deals with the history of the route. It also might be beneficial to the user because the old route is still open to visitation by pedestrian traffic.

Being somewhat new at Wikipedia, however, I don't know the best way to reference this from within the current page for WV 5. First, is there a reason why this might be considered inappropriate for this page, and if not, is there a way I could direct readers to this information, so that they may learn a little of the history of the road?

Thanks a bunch.

168.216.38.82 (talk) 13:42, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

I think you answered your own question with your latest edit to the page. =) The reason I removed the link initially is that it was presented as an external reference (a self-reference essentially) instead of a normal interarticle wikilink. I have no issues with its inclusion as it is now. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 18:51, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I gave it some thought and that seemed like that worked out fairly well. Thanks.

The AL2TB / Artisol2345 SSP case

TMF, it looks like AL2TB is going nuts trying to cover up any info on the results of the case. So far, he's:

  1. Removed the confirmed sock template from his userpage; DIFF
  2. Removed Rschen's comments from the closing clerk's talkpage; DIFF (Did this under an IP)

What do we do about this? It looks like he's gaming the system bigtime here... Edit Centric (talk) 01:11, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

The second link is definitely revertable IMO, since other users are generally not allowed to edit others' comments. The first...lemme ponder it for a bit. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 01:17, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm loathe to do the reverts, since I was the one that originated the SSP case. Rschen was the one filing the Check User, which came back as "Likely". Now, I could be wrong, but on the face of this, it's definitely hinky...Edit Centric (talk) 01:21, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Looks like both were taken care of. Regards, TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 02:26, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

KY Road Articles

Hello, I notice that in the past you've done quite a bit of editing on State Highway articles that I originate.

However, I noticed that on your latest edits to the new entries for KY 101 and KY 259, you've made the comment that "much more work needs to be done". I was curious as to what you meant by this.

Thanks much,

OPMaster (talk) 23:59, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Some SC highways in table, other not

Hello TMF, I have a quick question for you. In this list of SC highways article, state roads 1 to 50 are in a table and the higher ones are just listed. Is there a reason for the separation? Or is just that someone hasn't gotten around to added the higher ones to the table? I asked this question several weeks ago in the discussion page, but no one has answered me there. Thanks, Rocketmaniac (talk) 11:48, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey. I believe it's the latter reason, that no one's gotten around to completing it. Regards, TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 15:04, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

KY Shield Requests

Hello, I recently completed articles for Kentucky Routes 2158 and 3225. If you'd be so kind, could you whip up some shields for these routes for me? I'd greatly appreciate the help!

Thanks, OPMaster (talk) 03:48, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I can do the shields if the articles are rewritten to progress from south to north per WP:KYSH. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 05:16, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
By that I mean the infoboxes. The article prose seems to be fine. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 05:17, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Heh, I'm gradually coming around. While I apparently wrote the articles per the standard format, I hadn't corrected the infoboxes yet. I've already updated that section on KY 3225, I'll go take care of that on KY 2158 now. I do appreciate the help and hope that I've been of some assistance in catalouging some of the roads in my area.

Collaboration on NY 30A

Thank you for your recent cleanup/update to the history section (together with NY 30). As you're probably aware, I grew up by that highway and that was my first edit to Wikipedia; it's my aim to get it to GA status. It needs at least one photo which I will get in the spring, and I would hope to be able to create a map on my own (if you know how - or if it's better left to those more capable). I also hope to research the archives of the Gloversville Leader-Herald (which will require a trip to that city's library) and at the very least, interview my parents who grew up on opposite sides of the Arterial when it was being built. Question about article grading scale

Obviously whoever grades articles has a checklist, but why is NY 45 listed as start and NY 306 listed at GA. They seem to be pretty much identical articles as far as description, history, intersection table, pictures, map and sources. Palisades Interstate Parkway

I've made significant addition to the parkway's history and future, so I was wondering if you could re-grade the article whenever you have some time. It's at start right now. I made some upgrades to NY 94 as well, but to a lesser extent.

Also, if you guys need someone to grade articles or simply have the power to upgrade a grade after working on an article I'm more than willing to help. If that is possible, could you direct me to the checklists or what not I would need in grading. Thanks! -Airtuna08 (talk) 05:50, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, excluding WP:GA and higher, anyone can assess or reassess an article. Here's how I look at the levels: a B-Class article is one that covers the majority of the aspects of the topic, a stub is, well, a stub, and a start is somewhere in the middle. For the purposes of roads, a B-Class article is one that describes the routing, giving note to any peculiarities or points of interest on it (route description), has history on how it came to be, whether it be history on the road's construction, designation, or both (history), and a complete breakdown of what the road intersects, preferably with the mileage (referenced) between intersections (major intersections). A start-class is usually missing one of the elements, and a stub is typically missing two or more. WP:USRD/A more or less goes along with my personal viewpoint on how the levels work and also contains other information, such as on the importance scale.
If you want a second opinion on an assessment, you can either add "|reassess=yes" to the project banner on that article or join #wikipedia-en-roads and type in "reassessment bell", where someone will take a look at your article. Regards, TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 20:45, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Ok, thanks, based on that, I reassessed both articles as B class. I think the Palisades can be graded as even higher. I'll request the reassessment. -Airtuna08 (talk) 23:41, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

HELL YEAHS!!! Can I get a prediction out of you on the upcoming season? -FancyMustard (talk) 19:06, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to say that they'll at the very least win the East, but it all comes down to how well Pedro and Perez pitch. Pedro...who knows how much is left in the tank, and Perez still has times where he's wildly inconsistent. If both pitch well, the Mets will be in good shape; but if they don't, it's going to be a long season. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 19:35, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Can't really take to the bank John Maine is going to win 15 again. But Santana improves that staff 150%. I think Pedro will be solid for 20-25 starts, we know he'll def miss sometime. Perez is a wildcard, you never know what you'll get out of him. They should win the East though. I expect Delgado to bounce back and Reyes to give a complete season. How he faded so far in September is beyond me. They should win the East and have a strong shot at the World Series. -FancyMustard (talk) 20:55, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

NY 481

Come on man, you don't need to embarrass me like that on NY 481. I just put in alot of work on redoing alot of the page. I didn't realize they were the same source. Send me a note or something first before reverting my edits. It doesn't look good on me when you do that. I was simply upgrading the page. You caught me in mid-edit by changing it back. I thought something was wrong. It just confuses everything. Thanks. -Airtuna08 (talk) 19:40, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, a highway article I had been contributing to suddenly complained it needed a shield. Can you create it or let me know how it is done? It is for state highway 22, and I have a rather good jpeg of it in MS Picture Manager, but don't know how to get to you, if that is the procedure. Let me know. Thanks. With the detail of the article, I believe if there was a different route number applied prior to 1930 it would have been noted. The 1911 is accurate. -Airtuna08 (talk) 22:41, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

NY 25D Realignment

If you'd like a source regarding the former alignmnet and other sections of NY 25D, zoom in on one of the sources that you had already attached(http://www.nycroads.com/history/1941_metro-6/). BTW, the rewrite you did was pretty good. ----DanTD (talk) 21:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

I don't see how that gives a source for the cite needed tag. The tag is really for the second half of the sentence it's applied to (where it describes NY 25D being moved onto the expressway as it was built) rather than the first half, which is pretty much verified by looking at modern maps of the expressway service roads (which, as you know, carry the Harding, Nassau, and Power House names). A late 1950s map showing part of 25D still on its at-grade alignment and part on the LIE would be the best source for the sentence. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:04, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
I suppose I can see why you'd think that, although Power House and Nassau Boulevards are only part of the service road for a short distance. Power House is cut off by Christopher Morley Park, and Nassau Boulevard didn't provide full access to the Long Island Expressway when it was realigned between Exits 32 & 33, so NY 25D had to be realigned there as well. ----DanTD (talk) 01:23, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
In that case, I suppose the cite needed applies for the entire sentence then. I still don't see how the provided link gives a source for any of it. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 01:27, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Funny, I thought a close-up view, of these segments, and the comparison to the L.I.E. nearby would be convincing enough. Have you seen these parts of the L.I.E., Nassau Boulevard, and Power House Boulevard? Nassau Boulevard may've been part of NY 25D, but when the L.I.E was realigned the only connection to it in Queens was on the westbound service road west of Little Neck Parkway. Compare this to Lakeville Road in Lake Success, and you'll find that Nassau Bouleavard is a divided highway between the westbound service road and Lakeville. I could emphasize this on Wikimapia, if you'd like. ----DanTD (talk) 01:39, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm not following you at all. The statement needing a citation is "Horace Harding Boulevard, Nassau Boulevard, and Power House Road were then converted into service roads for the expressway while NY 25D was moved onto the expressway as it was completed." You've already shot down the first half of that above, and there's no guarantee that "while NY 25D was moved onto the expressway as it was completed" is correct. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 07:24, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I'm about to post a WikiMap of the area I'm talking about. This is Nassau Boulevard(http://wikimapia.org/#lat=40.770012&lon=-73.719978&z=14&l=0&m=a&v=2). Now take a look at the Long Island Expressway just south of it. You can see that only a portion of Nassau Blvd. is part of the service road, and the way that Exit 32 is constructed, there's no way that NY 25D could've stayed on Nassau Boulevard. Power House Boulevard is in a similar situation, but what cuts that road off is actually a County Park(http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/parks/wheretogo/active/morley.html). I suppose I should mark that on the WikiMapia as well. ----DanTD (talk) 18:07, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Then change the article. Still needs a reference from a late 1950s map though; making assumptions based on current alignments won't work if the article is to go somewhere like GA or FA. And none of this discussion has done anything to reference "while NY 25D was moved onto the expressway as it was completed". --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 20:48, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
The article's been changed to read "Parts of" the streets were turned into service roads. You can reference that to a current map if you want, but a 1950s map is still needed for the last half of the sentence. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 21:22, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
That's understandable, TMF. I could look for a link to the map in that list of historical New York Maps NE2 sent me. If that doesn't work, I could rummage for an old map in the family shed, and if that doesn't work, there's always the option of asking some members of Yahoo Northeastroads group. ----DanTD (talk) 22:06, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Southern Tier Expressway

Do you think it would be possible to create an image for the Southern Tier Expwy shield? Since the green and white shield accompanies the I-86/NY 17 route shields. Pictures of the shield can be found on the webpage:

Ngs61 (talk) 19:42, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

It could probably be done, but I don't see where it'd be used on Wikipedia other than the I-86 page (where the Southern Tier Expressway redirects), since the STE is not wikilinked (and rightfully so IMO) from every article on a route that meets I-86/NY 17. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 20:51, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Lists of minor routes

Sorry I didn't get a chance to respond on WT:USRD before our tangent got buried. I was only around sparingly the past couple of days and, of course, conversation moves much too quickly for me to be able to keep up properly.

You're absolutely right that I hadn't read the talk page on the New York article. But reading that didn't tell me anything I didn't already know from IRC discussions with you. I'm still not sure I see the point of eliminating cheap B's is. A B is a B, regardless of how it came about. It's certainly true that some articles will never reach FA-class, and it's certainly possible that these articles will never even reach GA-class. But that's not a reason for them not to exist at all. I don't know, I just don't see the point. Like NE2 said, "I never really liked the idea of merging unrelated routes into a larger list; it's essentially taking a number of articles and concatenating them for no good reason. It's not really much of a merge, since you just copy the text and stick it in; usually a merge eliminates some overlap between the two articles (such as a named freeway with the route it carries)." What exactly is the point of a merge that doesn't actually eliminate any overlap?

Also, as you yourself said, "There really isn't any title that would work that couldn't be construed as OR in someone's eyes..." Well, if it's OR no matter how you present it, then maybe they just weren't meant to be grouped that way.

Now, mind you, I'm not trying to start anything here (god no)-- it's not really OR in my eyes. I'm just saying that you can do things your way, and I'll do things mine, cheap B's and all. -- Kéiryn talk 15:08, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Where've you been?

Just worried about you. You haven't been on IRC in two days, and that I got you your answer for NY 47 along Long Pond Road. Mark says its Nathan Perry's site where he got the detail. Otherwise, we hope you return soon. Btw, I republished 431 as a seperate article, all its missing is the history of its designation and a picture. Cya, Mitch32contribs 02:10, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Man, can we talk? I know you've never been happy about some of my contribs, such as CR 560 in Erie County (which I just merged) and I feel if you want my opinion on things and what I feel (and the same for you) to the current situation. Please, it would help us both.Mitch32contribs 21:21, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
You're talking right now. :P I don't mind NY 431 getting pulled back out at all since you dug up some serious history on it. As for CR 560, I'm entirely indifferent. I did look at the former state route list; it needs work. For starters, the NY 338 alignments are flipped - the original alignment was the one around Schuylerville. The routes with main links shouldn't have the browse rows on the bottom of the mini-infoboxes, since someone clicking on, say, NY 47 from the browse on NY 48 will be taken to the article on NY 47, not to that list. There's also tone issues in areas ("The route was put out of its misery", "The route was killed off").
As for IRC (which is what I think you were implying above), I have no desire to rejoin the channel at the moment. By staying away from IRC, I'm able to reconnect to how Wikipedia works for those who don't discuss it 24/7 - and for me, reconnecting to that feeling helps to keep editing fresh. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 21:39, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Per the extra browsing, blame the WNY guy. Also, my new plans sort of put the list on the back burner, but I can get back to it eventually. I'm surprised you actually am willing to keep 431. I put that together worrying about your opinion on it. I through it together to one, please you and help you clear some of the minor list. (hint hint the ones taken out today). I also want to say, I'm always here if you need any help, it'll stink being without you on IRC. I just hope your opinions of my article choices changes because its not fun when you can't try something new. WikiWork isn't the end of the world :).Mitch32contribs 21:46, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, NY 431 is eight miles long - not exactly minor. My main concern about it was a potential lack of history, but as I said above, that's been resolved. Ideally, the list of minor routes should be restricted to those around or under three miles - but I'm not going to make heavy efforts to make that a hard-and-fast rule. Routes like NY 171 and NY 309 don't make efforts to impose a restriction any easier - both are over five miles long but (IMO) neither are worthy of a full article, with NY 171 being totally isolated from the state highway system and NY 309 being a spur to nowhere. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:12, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Anyway, 448 is in a sandbox now, I gave it a large shot. It seems to have come out well and I'd like to publish it if you feel its ok. Also, what would you do with something like 421, which is over 7 miles?Mitch32contribs 21:24, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Re 448, it looks OK but there's a lot of excessive bolding in the history. NY 117 should be wikilinked, not bolded, and there's no reason at all to bold NY 448. The see also section is also entirely redundant; both links are in the history. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:01, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Re 421, unless there's some history out there on its construction, there's not really much that can/should be done at the moment. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:03, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

WT:USRD Archives

Just so you know, Archive 12 wasn't "moved" per se. I moved the scope discussion to its own specially named archive first , and then created the numerical redirect afterwards just so that it would show up on the archive box. I intended the bot to go to #13 next so that on the off chance someone was browsing the archives in numerical order, they'd still hit all the threads in chronological order.

I'm not sure which way is better -- yours has the advantage (?) of making the scope discussion more prominent -- I'm mainly just writing this so you're aware that my "counter=13" edit wasn't an oversight. -- Kéiryn talk 15:13, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

If you're going to move it to its own archive then redirect a number there, then why not just keep it at the numerical archive? Moving it to a named archive but using up one of the numbered archives just to make it "show up" doesn't make any sense to me. Your method also messes up the indexing bot. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 06:59, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
The only reason I reverted was because the USRD newsletter went out linking the scope discussion to Archive 12. I'm not sure if that was a typo and it was supposed to be 13 or what...
I have no problem keeping it at just the numerical title (and I agree that this whole thing is more trouble than it's worth), although at this point it might require admin-assistance over the redirect. The indexing bot should be unaffected if it can just skip over 12 -- we don't need that indexed since it's only the scope discussion. -- Kéiryn talk 16:16, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry... the redirect at "/Archive 12" has edit history now... You want to perform the move, O Great Mop-handler? -- Kéiryn talk 16:18, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

On Long Island wikiproject

Hello, TwinMetsFan. I see you are the leader of the new york state wikiproject. I am the leader of WikiProject Long Island. Tell me if you need anything improved with Long Island. Ya know, just for Inter-WikiProject cooderination. Thank you. Nothing444 00:18, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good. Unfortunately, I haven't done as much as I'd like with the New York WikiProject (most of my time is spent at the state route subproject) but I hope that will change soon. As for Long Island...there's a lot of Unassessed New York articles from the Island, so if the Long Island project wants to go on an assessment drive, that would help both projects. Cheers, TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 07:24, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

NY 394's western terminus at NY 5 in Barcelona. You'd think it was Barcelona, Spain. You know, "the rain in Spain..."? Nevermind. :)

You'll see I added a couple of photos to New York State Route 394. I know the one with the lake isn't that great, but it was the best one I managed to get today. I have one more (at right), which I did not upload to the article itself because it was raining pretty hard when I go there. Plus, I now see the NY 394 sign doesn't show up very well at thumbnail size. Well, anyway, the photo is in the system, if you think it's worthy of inclusion anyway. Skudrafan1 (talk) 03:00, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Those pics of Mayville and the lake were perfect. Excellent job, man. IMO, NY 394 is now definitely worthy of GA status, and your pics play no small role in my opinion - those pics really accent the article and bring it color. Great job. On a related note, NY 60 will be a NYSR AID collaboration in a few weeks. If you could get some snaps for that route in the meantime, that'd be great. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 10:34, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

List of Interstate Highways

What's the logic in reverting a good faith change that doesn't violate any WP policy just because I didn't fix every error in the article all at once? I'm reverting back to my edit now and would encourage you and other editors to fix problems rather than revert good edits. Tomdobb (talk) 15:59, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

If the error is really an error (which I don't believe it is to begin with; naming convention guidelines deal with article names only), then it makes no sense whatsoever to change a select few links than all of them. Having some links piped and others not makes the list look messy. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 16:06, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I'll happily go through the entire article and eliminate the abbreviations. The only information I can find regarding state abbreviations is the naming conventions, so I'm taking them as applying to articles as well. If style dictates (or allows for even) the use of postal abbreviations in this way, I'll gladly revert my own edits. Tomdobb (talk) 16:13, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I've changed all the abbreviations to the full names for the sake of consistency. If it turns out that I've misinterpreted the style information, feel free to revert and accept my apologies. Tomdobb (talk) 16:29, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Long Island Award

Thanks! I'd join the project but I know I'd never have time to participate - too much work still to be done with state highways in New York. Maps Question(Quantum GIS)

I want to create maps for South Carolina roads and I am struggling to do it. I have Quantum GIS 0.8.1 and have GIS data for the state boundaries, interstates, and US and State Routes. However, I have been messing around with it for a while and have still failed to figure how to color lines red. I looked through the Map Task Force stuff and still found no good advice. Any advice? Clemson3564 (talk) 00:11, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Are you using the NHPN data? If so, what you have to do is split the road data apart into the different classes (Int., US, SH) and create new layers for each class to get the different colors/line widths. For selecting a road red, you then have to make a new layer containing just that road, which enables you to make just that road red. If you join the roads IRC channel, I can give you advice real-time, which may be easier (especially if you need assistance making the new layers). There's a link to the channel on my roads subpage. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 21:39, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
