[edit] Overview
In concept, Twisted Metal is a demolition derby which permits the usage of ballistic projectiles. Players choose a vehicle and an arena—or a series of arenas in the story mode—to engage in battle with opposing drivers. A variety of weapons, ranging from missiles to traps, are obtainable by pick-ups scattered throughout the stage; as well as certain "repair stations" that fully regenerate a player's health. The objective of the game is to be the last one standing.
The game's plot centers around a man named Calypso, the host of a vehicular combat tournament called Twisted Metal. He promises to grant the winner of the tournament anything he or she desires, without any limit of availability or even reality. The game's story takes place on Christmas Eve, 2005; during the 10th annual running of Twisted Metal taking place in Los Angeles.
[edit] Characters
The game counts with a total of 13 selectable vehicles. Each vehicle has its own set of stats, including armor/resistance, speed/handling and power; as well as a unique Special Attack, special weapons related to the vehicle, that ranges from barrage of missiles, laser beams or simple on-contact attacks.

[edit] Trivia
- Originally the game was planned to feature live-action ending videos for the character's endings, but they were cut off midway through development and replaced by text-based endings. Most of the text endings remained faithful to the video endings, though a few are slightly different (Sweet Tooth's), while others portray even different motivations (Thumper's). The videos were included among the bonus features of the PlayStation 2 port of the original PSP game Twisted Metal: Head-On.
- This was the only game in the Twisted Metal series that allowed an "in-car" camera view, complete with dashboard and steering wheel. It was viewable by pressing "select" on the controller to toggle between camera views.
- The original working title for the series was going to be High Octane, as shown in a few of the original ending videos in which Calypso refers to it. The title was most probably changed to avoid confusion or copyright infringement with Bullfrog's Playstation car combat game Hi-Octane released the same year. As an in-joke of the scrapped name, in the Arena stage one can see a poster saying High Octane 2005. A second name proposed for the game was Urban Assault[citation needed], though it ended being used as the game's subtitle instead
