[edit] Tim Walton

I was born 23 years ago in Kings Lynn, Norfolk but can now be found sitting at my desk in the Physics department at Lancaster University, where I am studying for a PhD in Mathematical Physics. I am part of IMGG Lancaster, the Industrial Mathematics and Gravity Group at Lancaster University and also an Associate Member of the Institute of Physics.

[edit] My Research

I work within the realms of classical general relativity and am currently studying a formulation of continuum mechanics to work within this setting. Continuum mechanics is a classical field theory and the correct covariant geometric setting of classical field theory is the jet bundle. Hence, much of my work involves the translation of continuum mechanics to this multisymplectic setting. I am particular interested in relativistic formulations of elastic and anelastic materials. My thesis is directed towards a description of such phenomena, in the relativistic regime, incorporating thermodynamic properties of the material.

I am a very interested in film; both the making and watching of. I have made a few films, most notably 'Awake', which won an award at the Lancaster Short Film and New Media Festival. My favourite film director is Takeshi Kitano whose films are made so simply (some may say minimalist), yet are filled with such beauty. It was his films that first made me pick up a camera and have a go myself. I am currently working with a professional film production company, (Workshop Productions) to set up Lancaster FilmFest, Lancaster's first short film festival.

  • I am also a big reader, and can often be found hiding behind a book, curled up in a big chair. My favourite author flits between Anthony Burgess and Russell Hoban, depending on whom I read last, but I generally read anything and everything.

  • I must also say that I love spending time with my girlfriend.
