Contents |
[edit] Description
The site began on November 1, 2001 and has expanded to accept votes from registered members for over 8000 television shows throughout TV history. The site contains information on over 5000 TV-DVD releases - including full season, best of, and individual episode releases. The site also posts thousands of news articles relating to upcoming releases, reviews of TV-DVDs that are currently on the market, and sometimes a list of alterations (such as use of syndicated episode versions and music replacement) to various TV-DVDs.
Users can create accounts to vote for which TV shows they would like to see on DVD and compile lists of the sets they own and want. The site currently receives over 75,000 visitors a day[1] and has official links with many major studios. The site also maintains an RSS feed and a blog.
[edit] Home Theater Forum
The site is very closely linked to Home Theater Forum.[2] The founder of TVShowsOnDVD.com, Gord Lacey, and the site's news direcor, David Lambert, are both regularly posting members at the "HTF" and were registered there prior to the creation the site they work at. The HTF's "Software - TV Shows" section remains the official message board of TVShowsOnDVD.com.
[edit] Successful DVD releases
The site has had several noted success stories. Studios have credited voting results at TVShowsOnDVD.com for the release to DVD of series such as seaQuest DSV[3] and The Young Riders.[4] Press releases announcing DVDs of Perfect Strangers[5] and Third Watch[6] mention TVShowsOnDVD.com's voter rankings of the shows.
Site owner Gord Lacey intervened with studios on behalf of members and fans to improve several TV-DVD releases including the second season release of Justice League,[7] and the release of an alternate version of ER's 4th season episode, "Ambush".[8]
[edit] Popularity
Alexa Internet traffic rankings system lists TVShowsOnDVD.com as the most popular website for TV-DVD information,[9] and the third most popular website for Region 1 DVD news and information.[10]
On February 15, 2007, Gord Lacey announced that the site had been acquired by TV Guide.[11]
