TVP Kultura is the first TV theme channel ever to be run by the Polish public broadcaster TVP. It was launched on April 24, 2005 and is decicated to arts and culture. Every day of the week the channel concentrates on other disciplines, e.g. cinema, music, etc. It is broadcast from the TVP headquarters in Warsaw and is available in cable networks and on digital platforms in Poland. Krzysztof Koehler is TVP Kultura's chief.

In 2006 and again in 2007 TVP Kultura won Hot Bird TV Award, the most prestigious European TV award, in category Culture/Education. This wasthe first time in the history of the price that one station won it twice in a row.

TVP Kultura has been awarded two “Satellite Oscars” in a prestigious “Hot Bird TV Awards” 2006 and 2007 contest. Programming offer:

Promo spots: The monochromatic visual identify has been design for TVP Kultura by Mariusz Wilczyński . The first polish animation film maker who will have his works presented in the prestige The National Gallery in London and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Winner of many international and polish awards (among them “Złoty Glan” of the 7th “Powiększenia” Artistic Festival in Łódź, for his TVP Kultura promos), recognized as one of the most important artistic animation maker in the world. TVP Kultura promo spots being hand drawn and animated with one of the simplest and most traditional technique, stands in obvious opposition to the 3D aesthetics so domineering in virtually all the commercial TV stations. Each of several dozen 30-second TVP Kultura promo spots makes a complete story with a certain plot and punch line. The protagonists of those cartoons are the Cat and the Mouse, bound by a peculiar love affair. What is also crucial in those stories is the time factor. The protagonists gradually change. The Cat and the Mouse shall grow old step by step, falling ill, to finally give way to a new generation – just the way it happens in a real life. TVP Kultura promo spots were put together and formad a short movie "Kizi-mizi" which had its premiere in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the movie was shown in the 2008 edition of Berlinale (in the section Berlinale Shorts).

-Studio Kultura : Modern, live “fast reaction” show. The latest news from the world of culture, festivals, premieres, debuts, events, controversies. Hot issues, disputes, interviews, discussions, and polemics. Uncompromising clash of opinions, beliefs and outlooks.

-“Bajkonurr”...Discovering the World of Children’s Literature: Artist from outside the mainstream, people with extraordinary personalities read the most interesting contemporary children’s books, which are not only valuable and wise, but also attractively illustrated. The key aim of the authors of the show is to propagate proper reading habits to promote the highest standards of children’s literature.

-Third Point of View: Three most intriguing, most extraordinary, and most fascinating, or even most ambiguous events of the week in the eyes of three philosophers. Marek Cichocki, Dariusz Gawin and Dariusz Karłowicz comment on what is the most important and funniest in art, politics and sports, or economy, without getting too serious about it. Perverse disputes, brilliant comments, surprising punch lines, in other words the contemporary society from the third point of view.

-Thematic Programmes: Daily 30 minute cycles devoted to various fields of art (theatre, literature, cinematography, music).

-For the Weekend: Practical guide to cultural events from all over Poland. What, where, and when is worth seeing or visiting at the coming weekend. Suggestions for children, parents, and grandparents., for traditionalists and experimentalists. Invitations to movies, operas, theatres and concert halls all over the country. Specialities:

-Zone: The latest tends in art, artistic provocation, creative experiments. Artistic Hyde Park, i.e. absolutely free zone for artistic expression. Happening, performance, installation, video-art... These are not only “artistic activities”, but they also serve us contemporary language of social communication. Joining the artist, TVP Kultura viewers are faced with inconvenient questions concerning their role in various soial and media games.

-Live Art: Comprehensive live coverage of the key artistic events in Poland. Broadcasts of concerts, theatrical performances, and most prominent musical contests. Interviews with artists, live commentaries and impressions from audience and critics.

-Roots of Culture: Geographic and historic quest for the most interesting cultures, countries, ethnic groups, or cities from all over the world. Presentation of tradition, philosophy, and cultural heritage. TVP Kultura has already paid a visit in Balkans, the Eastern borderlands, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Georgia, Argentina, India, Israel, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Romania, Sweden, America as well as many other better or less known locations.

-Sunday with... Sunday with, i.e. ... unknown facets of well-known people. Sundays at TVP Kultura are hosted by extraordinary representatives of the world of culture. What do they like? What works have had the greatest impact on them? Who has had the most influence on them? The protagonists of “Sunday with...” discover the unknown world of their fascinations and emotional thrills.

TVP Kultura Active Studio:

From September the 3rd TVP Kultura studio changes into active, live, multimedia display of modern art. Video visualizations, installations, mirror prisms, computer graphics and many more were a part of chanels experimental project - Active Studio.

Artists created a new project of a decoration for 10 months. TVP Kultura worked on this exceptional project along with Contemporary Art Center in Warsaw, and polish most talented artists. The installations are supposed to drag viewers into interaction between a creator and his “work in progress”. During ten months, five various artists who - basing on a studio decoration - shown their specific style. Each one of them worked on their project for two months. Every two weeks to build up curiosity in viewers, a new fragment of the decoration was shown.

At the end of our project all five decoration werebe presented on a special exhibition in Contemporary Art Center in Warsaw.

Major Events:

-Spring with Werner Herzog: The most acclaimed feature movies and the key documentaries by Werner Herzog. Interviews with artists, critics, and film experts. Profound analyses, unconventional interpretations, animated discussions, and – last but not least – extraordinary movies of international stature.

-Frederic Chopin’s Piano Competition: 130 hours of broadcast in 20 days. Performances by 80 piano players from all over the world, interviews with piano experts, live commentaries, contestant profiles, first audience reactions. TVP Kultura is the only TV station to have broadcast the entire 15th Frederic Chopin’s Piano Competition – from the preliminaries to the final concert. The International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition is one of the oldest music contests in the world, enjoying enormous prestige and global acclaim. It is the member organization of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva. An award, or even a distinction at the competition is the beginning of an international career, granting access to the world’s most renowned concert halls.

-Everything about Kieślowski: Twenty seven Kieślowski’s movies in less than a month. The most acclaimed feature movies, documentaries, and film-school exercises, as well as theatrical performances directed by Kieślowski, and documentaries devoted to him. The screenings accompanied by special thematic sets, e.g. “Communist Poland According to Kieślowski”, “Krzysztof Kieślowski in TV theatre”, “Krzysztof Kieślowski – the beginnings”.

-24 hours with Mozart: Major international artistic and TV venture inaugurating the Mozart Year in 2006. Mass-scale twenty four hour music marathon. Broadcasts from the world’s most famous concert halls. Symphonies, concerts, chamber music, and live operas from Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Peking, and many other spots. Participating in the “24 hours with Mozart” event TVP Kultura has entered the circle of the most prestigious world TV stations, including Austrian ORF, German ZDF, French ARTE, British BBC, Swiss RTSI, or Japanese NHK.

-Week with Szymanowski: An exceptional artistic and TV event. Concerts, recital, ballets, performances, documentaries, as well as disputes among the greatest experts in classical music. Extraordinary soloists, superb orchestras, acclaimed names (Nahorny, Zanussi, Wiłkomirska, Szymczewska, to name but a few).

TVP Kultura art patronage:

-“30 minutes project”: The “30 Minutes Project” co-organized by TVP Kultura is a great chance for a feature debut for the young generation of filmmakers. Each debutant had at their disposal a budget of PLN 100 000, executional and artistic assistance, professional equipment, and distributional support. Thanks to this absolutely unique initiative young directors are given a chance to commence their career and the Polish cinematography is enriched every year with 10 short films devoted to contemporary issues. The firs nine movies shot for the “30 Minutes Project” were presented for the first tome in TVP Kultura in Dec 2006.

-Animated Culture: To present the most extraordinary, the most novel, and the most interesting makers of animated movies. To juxtapose the generation of classic artists with Young, Gifted and Daring. To go against all the current trends and clichéd formulas. These are the objectives set by TVP Kultura inviting renowned Polish artists – people representing various generations, styles schools, and dispositions. All of them were requested to make short TVP Kultura promo spots. This resulted in a series of perverse and provocative jingles, which soon became the trademark of the channel.

-TVP Kultura Awards: Each year in April, to celebrate its anniversary TVP Kultura awards the most intriguing, and the most distinctive artistic personalities of the previous season. Those awards are meant not only to acknowledge artists, but also to promote valuable art and its authors. The award gala takes place during an official anniversary concert.

-Russia-Poland. New Perspective: “Russia-Poland” is an international artistic and social project co-organized by TVP Kultura. As a result of this unprecedented initiative an extraordinary series of twelve documentaries by Polish and Russian representatives of the young generation has been shot. Poles talking about Russia, and Russians – about Poland.
