Thomas Vanhecke is currently a cardiology fellow at William Beaumont Hospital. He is member of the Research Institute Board of Governors. Dr. Vanhecke a native of Michigan and was the 2nd of 5 children of Gus Vanhecke and Jillayne Engel. Thomas Vanhecke graduated from Hill-McCloy High School of Montrose, MI. He received a bachelor's in science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He also spent one year in a master's program at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, before attending the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. Thomas Vanhecke graduated from medical school with honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor society.
Throughout his educational career, Dr. Vanhecke has held several various part-time and full-time jobs. His first real job was as carpenter on several various construction crews in residential framing. During his undergraduate years he worked in the Emergency Department at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI. For one year following graduation from U of M, he worked in the Center for Biologic Nanotechnology at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. During his one year in the master's program at Wayne State University, he taught a genetics laboratory.
