TV listings (UK)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TV listings in the United Kingdom are the lists of programmes/TV shows that will appear on television over the next few days and weeks. The Press Association is a major provider of these listings within the United Kingdom. Traditionally these have been simple lists of what appears in chronological order on the various channels available, having been designed for an age in which there were only a few channels, and where the only medium was paper. Now, with over 360 channels in the UK alone, the internet offering different formats and possibilities for TV listings, and with television starting to appear in both mobile and internet formats, the whole approach to TV listings is changing. The BBC have a competition whereby they are opening up their TV listings to encourage designers and developers to use their TV listings in new and original ways.

On August 6, 2005 an article in the Financial Times said:

The more that human activity moves on to the internet, the greater the power of the search engines.....People once dreamed of 500-channel television: once you can plug your TV into the internet why stop at 500, or even 5,000? With a search engine as your guide, find anything you want.
