Turku and Pori County

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Turku and Pori County (Finnish: Turun ja Porin lääni, Swedish: Åbo och Björneborgs län) was a county of Sweden from 1634 to 1809 (only known by its Swedish name) and after the Treaty of Fredrikshamn a county of Grand Duchy of Finland. Later on, it continued its existence in the independent Finland until 1997, when a reform introduced a new administrative entity, the Province of Western Finland. Åland was part of the county from 1634 until it gained autonomy in the 1920s, within independent Finland.

The county was named after the cities of Turku and Pori.
