Turaga are fictional characters in Lego Bionicle story. A Turaga is a retired Toa hero, who has fulfilled his destiny and given up his powers. Turaga use wisdom gained from their days as heroes to help lead communities of Matoran.

[edit] Powers
Though Turaga have given up most of their powers, they retain a few of the abilities they once held as Toa. They, unlike Toa cannot activate the abilities of the powerful Great Masks, though they can use the Noble Masks which they wear on. They are also known to carry staffs, which are reminiscent of their former Toa tools. Finally, they have barely no elemental power left available to them.
If a Toa is in some kind of altered state upon giving up their Toa power, then their Turaga forms would have similar alterations. For instance, theoretical "Turaga Nuva" would be able to share mask abilities and "Turaga Inika" would have electrically-charged elemental attacks as well as organic masks.[1]
It is also possible for six Turaga to join together to form a great sage and wise leader known as a Turaga Nui. This, so far, has never been done in the storyline.
[edit] List of Turaga
[edit] Mata Nui/Metru Nui
These Turaga were once the Toa Metru who, after the Great Cataclysm struck the city of Metru Nui, brought the Matoran of the city to the safety of Mata Nui in the Great Rescue. In the thousand years since, they have led the Matoran villages in making a living on the island; and once the Toa Mata arrived the Turaga provided valuable support in their fight against Makuta. When the path to Metru Nui was re-opened, they and the Matoran went back to their ancient home, and these Turaga now serve as advisors under Turaga Dume. For information on these characters before they became Turaga, see their corresponding entries in List of Matoran.
[edit] Turaga Vakama
Vakama is the Turaga of Ta-Metru. Once a Turaga of Ta-Koro, and previously a Toa Metru of Fire and a Matoran maskmaker, Vakama is known for his great courage and hot temper. As a Toa, he was insecure and prone to the other Toa's complaints of having a "fire-spitter" as a leader, often leading him to anger. Realizing his mistakes, he has calmed down into a wiser and more patient leader of the Ta-Matoran. Even if he isn't a Toa, he frequently aids the Toa Mata, and once even fought against the mighty Rahi Nui. Vakama has been plagued all his life by visions of the future. He also has trouble trusting the Toa Mata, stemming from the betrayal of "Turaga Dume" (Makuta in disguise) and his own mistakes as a Toa Metru. Because of this, he usually divulges information strictly on a need-to-know basis. During the journey back to Metru Nui, he has revealed his history to the Toa Nuva, and the Matoran.
Vakama told the Toa Nuva the stories of what they may encounter an Metru Nui upon arrival, and the story of the Visorak. After escaping Metru Nui after defeating Makuta, the Toa Metru had returned for the Matoran, and were captured by the Visorak and mutated into Toa Hordika. While a Hordika, Vakama was overcome with unbearable rage and anger, and joined the Visorak's leaders, Sidorak and Roodaka, to help them capture the other Toa Hordika. He succeeded in ambushing Ragah Norik, and nearly killed Hordika Matau before realizing what he had done. He then helped the other Hordika and Keetongu destroy the Visorak leaders before being returned to Toa Metru form.
Vakama and the other Toa Metru used almost all of their Toa power to revive the dormant Matoran so they could live on the island of Mata Nui, transforming them into Turaga.
Vakama wears the Kanohi Huna, the Noble Mask of Concealment, which allows him to turn invisible for a short period of time. He also wields a limited amount of fire elemental energy, and a Firestaff (this very same Firestaff was also his tool to make masks as a Matoran) used for the trade as his badge of office.
[edit] Turaga Nokama
Turaga Nokama is the Turaga of Ga-Metru. Prior to her arrival on Metru Nui, she was a Turaga of Ga-Koro, but was also a Toa Metru of Water and a Matoran teacher in Metru Nui. Though she missed the life as a Matoran during her Toa days, she now leads them. This role suits her, as she is the wisest of all the Turaga, and as cool and calm as the sea itself. Peaceful, she attempts to settle the tempers of the other Turaga in a mature way. She always listens to every side of an argument before giving a ruling, and is extremely logical, as she knows the dangers of unchecked emotion. Keeping secrets does not sit well with Turaga Nokama; she has been known to defy the other Turaga, especially about the Turaga's past as Toa Metru and the current status of Mata Nui, even though she and her fellow Turaga agreed to keep it secret. She also allowed Toa Gali Nuva to see some carvings she had made as a Toa Metru during a training session, giving the Toa Nuva a glimpse of the past.
Nokama and the other Toa Metru used almost all of their Toa power to revive the dormant Matoran so they could live on the island of Mata Nui, transforming them into Turaga.
Turaga Nokama still has a limited power over water, and wears the Kanohi Rau, the Noble Mask of Translation, allowing her to read any written language. She also carries a fork-shaped staff made of Makuta fish bones, known as the "Trident of Nokama". She once created this fork-shaped staff as a Toa on her way to Mata Nui, but created it once more as a Turaga, and has wielded it ever since.
[edit] Turaga Matau
Matau is the Turaga of Le-Metru. Previously he was a Turaga of Le-Koro, and then the Toa Metru of Air and a Matoran Ussal cart driver. Matau always has taken risks recklessly, but as a Turaga he has changed. Calm in a crisis, he never asks the Le-Matoran to do anything he is not willing to do himself, and in return the Le-Matoran are extremely loyal to him, considering him a wise and brave leader. He is also known as a prankster and a lover of a good practical joke. Like all of Mata Nui's Le-Matoran, he commonly used "Treespeak" (though now that he lives in Metru Nui, he probably speaks "Chutespeak") slang, using it in his motto: "talk ever-quick, and move ever-quicker". When faced with a fork in the road he always advises going right (as he had some bad experiences with left forks as a Toa Metru).
Matau and the other Toa Metru used almost all of their Toa power to revive the dormant Matoran so they could live on the island of Mata Nui, transforming them into Turaga.
He carries the Kau-Kau Staff, which was named after the call of Brakas monkeys by Onewa, who originally suggested it as a joke. He also uses a limited power over air, and he wears the Kanohi Mahiki, the Noble Mask of Illusion, letting him create images to confuse enemies.
[edit] Turaga Onewa
The Turaga of Po-Metru, he was a Turaga of Po-Koro, a powerful Toa Metru of Stone, and a carver in Metru Nui. Prior to his transformation into a Turaga, he was not the greatest teammate, and was particularly like the stone he once worked with. He once also lived only for the present, but now he finds virtues in both the past and the future, and also became known to the Po-Matoran as "the Referee" for his skill at resolving disputes, seeking to solve arguments rather than create them. Unfortunately, inside, he still retains some of his former nature, and is the most hard-headed of the Turaga. Onewa is also known to have come up with original form of the game of Koli, but Hewkii eventually inspired a new version (called "kolhii") by saving Macku with a fishing staff.
Onewa and the other Toa Metru used almost all of their Toa power to revive the dormant Matoran so they could live on the island of Mata Nui, transforming them into Turaga.
Onewa carries a Stone Hammer, and commands the limited elemental energies of stone. He wears the Kanohi Komau, the Noble Mask of Mind Control, allowing him to control beings with weak willpower.
[edit] Turaga Whenua
Whenua is the Turaga of Onu-Metru. A former Turaga of Onu-Koro, a Toa Metru of Earth, and an archivist in Metru Nui, he known for his honesty. As he often says, "It serves no purpose to be false, for the earth cannot be deceived." Even now, he still puts great stock in the past and what can be learned from it, but he sees more awareness in the past and the future than when he was a Toa. Whenua was the one Toa Metru who knew the dangers of the Visorak before they were captured.
Whenua and the other Toa Metru used almost all of their Toa power to revive the dormant Matoran so they could live on the island of Mata Nui, transforming them into Turaga.
Whenua carries a Drill Staff (also known as the "Drill of Onua") and wears the Kanohi Ruru, the Noble Mask of Night Vision, allowing him to see in the darkness of the underground. He also commands the limited elemental energy of earth.
[edit] Turaga Nuju
Nuju is the Turaga of Ko-Metru. Once a Turaga of Ko-Koro, a former Toa Metru of Ice, and a seer in Metru Nui, he is an excellent storyteller from all his history, although he chooses not to speak in the Matoran language; he instead communicates in the Rahi bird language taught to him by Rahaga Kualus, which consists of whistles and gestures (only Matoro can translate this language, though the other Turaga usually have an idea of what he's saying). His reasoning for this is that those who will not take the time to get a translation aren't worth talking to. Of all the Turaga, he changed very little in personality, and has no objections over voicing his opinions, preferring to go "right to the heart of the matter".
Nuju and the other Toa Metru used almost all of their Toa power to revive the dormant Matoran so they could live on the island of Mata Nui, transforming them into Turaga.
Nuju carries an Ice Pick (also known as "Ice Pick of Nuju") and wears the Kanohi Matatu, the Noble Mask of Telekinesis, which lets him move objects with his mind. He uses the limited energies of ice at his command.
[edit] Metru Nui
[edit] Turaga Dume
The wise elder of Metru Nui and a former Toa of Fire, Dume has led the city of Metru Nui for roughly fifteen thousand years. Like other Toa and Turaga of Fire, he is brave and wished for Metru Nui to soon become a great city deserving its future name, the City of Legends. Supervising and aiding the Matoran, he helped to create the Vahki, authorized experiments and research (such as Mavrah's ocean Rahi experiments), and basically ran the city trouble-free, as no one would dare to attack such a great city which benefited other islands outside of its own. Unfortunately, this time was not to last for Dume, as the Dark Hunters attempted to establish a base in Metru Nui, forcing him to call on Toa Lhikan (whom it is said Dume somehow helped become a Toa) and his team prior to the threat of the Kanohi Dragon, which they helped to defeat.
Dume continued rule over Metru Nui, and was protected from the Shadowed One's schemes, which included kidnapping and blackmail. But even he was unable to stop the Dark Hunters when they grew so frustrated that they declared war on the city. Thankfully, Metru Nui survived, in no small part to the efforts of a 300 Toa Army that drove the Hunters out of the city. In the time leading up to the Great Cataclysm, Dume was abducted and secretly replaced by Makuta, who took on Dume's appearance to fulfill his sinister goals. Turaga Dume was imprisoned in a container beneath Po-Metru. He was awakened and freed sometime during the Visorak's conquest of the city, the container malfunctioning and opening up early.[2] He refused to return to Mata Nui so he could keep an eye out for the City of Legends. He fixed what damage to the city he could using his Noble Kiril, sometimes aided by the visiting Rahaga and their allies, awaiting the day that the Matoran would return.
After a thousand years, the Matoran did indeed return, and Dume was happy to have his city populated once again, resuming control over the Matoran, with the Turaga of Mata Nui as his advisers. He has been having trouble adjusting to sharing his rule with the other Turaga, however, and doesn't help that these Turaga had formed close friendships with their charges, which Dume doesn't quite understand as he had always ruled at a distance. His problems were just a small one after he discovered in fact that Great Spirit Mata Nui is not sleeping, but dying and that the end of the world is near. Soon after the Matorans' return, Dume and the other Turaga sent the Toa Nuva on a mission to find a Mask of Life that could save him, leaving Takanuva as a guardian. They agreed not to tell the Matoran of this to save them from worry, but this decision led Jaller to declare a citywide strike because he was tired of their secrets. Upon learning that Jaller and his compatriots - the future Toa Inika - had vanished, Dume blamed the other Turaga, claiming that in dying they could at least have had pride in accepting their fate.
Dume wears the Kanohi Kiril, the Noble Mask of Regeneration, which allows him to repair inanimate objects and buildings, but not heal living things. He also commands limited fire elemental energy, and in Bionicles 2: Legends of Metru Nui, Turaga Dume used a staff, and wore a cape.
[edit] Turaga Lhikan
The last Toa of Fire before the coming of the Toa Metru, he infused his Toa powers within a set of Toa stones and became a Turaga. However, he was imprisoned by the Dark Hunters, prior to this event. Taken to a prison in Po-Metru, he helped three of the Toa Metru (Nuju, Onewa, and Whenua) discover their mask powers. He later aided the Toa in the fight with Makuta, and perished taking a dark energy blast meant for Vakama. He would live on however, in a never dying legacy. His story would be passed on from Toa team to Toa team.
He was a Turaga of Fire, and had a limited amount of power over fire. He carried a small shield (a transformed version of the Fire Greatswords he used as a Toa). He wore the Kanohi Hau, the Noble Mask of Shielding, which Vakama passed on to Jaller to replace a broken mask.
[edit] Voya Nui
[edit] Turaga Jovan
Jovan was a Toa of Magnetism who led his team to Mount Valmai to find and use the Ignika Mask of Life roughly eighty thousand years ago. He eventually became the Turaga elder to the Matoran living in the region. He often advised that "Knowledge is a sharper weapon than a sword"; not only to his Matoran charges but to others he met, like Toa Lesovikk.[3] When the region broke off from the mainland in the Great Cataclysm and became the island of Voya Nui, Turaga Jovan and many others were killed. Jovan wore the Kanohi Kadin, the Noble Mask of Flight. For information on Jovan before he became a Turaga, see Jovan.
[edit] Trivia
- Turaga Vakama serves as the narrator for all three Bionicle movies to date: Mask of Light, Legends of Metru Nui, and Web of Shadows.
