[edit] LGBT Tag

OK, it's come on and gone off, with messages ranging from that their board didn't want it on to "nothing in the article" to specify that they're a GLBT organization. I don't think it matters so much what their board wants except that I'm personally a little uncomfortable with them not wanting it, but my wishes don't matter either. However, they're a member of GALA, which is the Gay and Lesbian Chorus association, so I think it's pretty clear. I'm open to discussion, however. I have re-added it pending a convincing argument. A. The Turtle Creek Chorale is an arts organization. A majority of the members and staff of the organization are gay, but membership is open to all persons regardless of race, creed, color, ability, age, or sexual orientation.

However, in southern-speak, that translates to "it's a gay chorus." Can't necessarily cite that, but since "a majority of members and staff" are gay, that counts for something. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 01:02, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
There's a difference between the "Tag" and the "Series" box. With regards to the LGBT Project Tag, it seems correct to include it due to their membership in GALA. With regards to the "LGBT & Queer Studies Series" box, I'm not so sure that's necessary. The choir might be members of GALA in such a way as...Maybe the company I work for is a corporate sponsor of the Human Rights Campaign. Would we place the series box on all such sponsors' pages? There's a difference between supporting the work of or donating to and belonging to. The analogy to a company is apples/oranges. In this case, they are an active member of an organization for gay choruses. Your company is not an active member in the HRC, they support the work of it. Two different things. Sorry, I think this one is appropriately placed. Philippe 03:48, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps my hypothetical analogy was not the best. I'm simply trying to illustrate the difference between being "affiliated" with something and being a "primary topic" of something. Where the article does not discourse on anything LGBT related, simply states an affiliation to the LGBT community, I hesitate to include the LGBTQ Studies Series box (recently changed to a footer) in the article at this time. IMHO whether the chorus is a 'gay chorus' or not...or for that matter a gay organization or not, it is definitely of interest to the lgbt community. be it for their association with the gay community, or for their lack of wanting to be associated...they are very much of interest. --emerson7 | Talk 03:00, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Of that, I have no doubt. My concern remains fixated on the "LGBTQ Studies" box which dominates the (foot) of the article space - an article which does not yet incorporate adequate content to warrant the inclusion of this sometimes overwhelming series infobox. Please address this issue. Is the series box appropriate to the current state of the article? Can the article be improved to warrant the box's inclusion? I can see, from the first paragraph, how this box might be warranted on San Diego Men's Chorus article. I do not, however, see such lucid proof of the same inclusion in the current version of this article. ZueJay (talk) 16:25, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Check out this interview regarding the recent PBS documentary about TCC: Tim Seelig, the Turtle Creek Chorale's Artistic Director, Explains The Power of Harmony. Seelig describes TCC as part of the gay choral movement, and it is very clear that TCC is a gay organization. On a personal note, not only is TCC a member of GALA Choruses, it is one of its leaders. GALA Choruses's board of directors (upon which I served for a year), for instance, has included a TCC staff or chorus member for at least the last ten years. MusicMen 16:11, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Maybe the solution is to add/explain the whole gay/anti-gay issue as a NEW section to the article?. Being fair to point out that the board (apparently) does not want to be perceived as a gay organization (and subject to verification - do they have "official" heterosexuals members). And then also pointing out that they are a member of the GALA choruses, and have many gay singers/board/administration member???? Faerichiee 03:36, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
