[edit] Definitions, Kurdish, and Uyghur

The original uploader says:

Updated form of Turkic_language_map3.png image in Turkic languages topic. It is wrongly depicted that some part of Turkey does not speak Turkish. This image is the corrected form.

Since Kurds, who speak a Indo-European (Iranian) tongue, clearly live in some parts of Turkey, the question is, is this a map of where the Turkic language is official, where it is dominant first language, where it is a known language by a majority, or the superset of all?

It strikes me from the map that it is not where the tongues are official - if so, for example the entire autonomous region of Xinjiang would be yellow due to Uyghur (and Kazak) presence (see Image:Xinjiang_nationalities_by_prefecture_2000.png). Likewise, since Kurdish is dominant in some parts of eastern Turkey, this cannot be a map of where the tongue is dominant first language. The only option left is some Turkic language is known by a majority.

This needs to be clarified so the map has neither the POV of Pan-Turkic nationalists, nor those who might seek to minimize the extent of Turkic language and culture.

Therefore, I am going to add to the description page that this is a map of where a Turkic tongue is known by a majority of people, and hopefully future edits will adhere to that. Brianski 09:55, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
