Alternate Cover to Black Panther #18, Art by Michael Turner

[edit] Fair use rationale for Storm (Marvel Comics)

This image, TurnerStorm.jpg, is being linked here; though the picture is subject to copyright I (Onomatopoeia 09:28, 30 November 2006 (UTC)) feel it is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  1. No free alternative can exist given the likeness of the character Storm is a trademark and thus protected;
  2. It is a low resolution copy of a comic book cover;
  3. The image was released to the media to promote the issue in question, issue 18 Black Panther;
  4. It does not limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the comic book in any way;
  5. Copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the comic book cover art on another comic book;
  6. The image is significant; it was created by a notable comic book artist, Michael Turner. It is the cover to a notable issue, which marries Storm to Black Panther, a move explicitly made by Marvel Comics editor Joe Quesada to push the sales of both characters [1], and this issue ties in to the major Civil War storyline of the acclaimed author Mark Millar of 2006; and it identifies the character depicted, Storm in an iconic manner, with the copyright owner using the image for a $125 comic with variant cover [2] and promotional work.
