Tunghai University (zh-tw: 東海大學, Pe̍h-oē-jī: Tang-hái-täi-hãk), was founded by Protestant missionaries in 1955. The University is located on the western side of Taichung, Taiwan, an urbanized area. On the grounds, Luce Memorial Chapel (designed by noted architect I. M. Pei) is a local landmark.

Tunghai villa, Taichung County, is the nearest commercial area. Tunghai Art Street, the Taichung Metropolitan Park and the Feng Chia Night Market are also near campus.

Tunghai University is organized into seven colleges which contain thirty-four academic departments. Included are:

  • The Agriculture College: Animal Science, Food Science, Hospitality Management
  • The Arts College: Chinese Literature, Foreign Languages, History, Japanese, Philosophy
  • The Engineering College: Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Enterprise Information, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Electrical Engineering
  • The Management College: Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Information Management, International Business, Statistics
  • The Science College: Life Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics
  • The Social Science College: Economics, Law, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Work, Sociology
  • The College of Fine Arts and Creative Design: Fine Arts, Music, Architecture, Industrial Design, Landscape Architecture
  • Chinese Language Center: [1]: Open since 1971, Tunghai's CLC was the first language training center in Central Taiwan, and has seen thousands of foreign students learn Mandarin from around the world.

The Tunghai University Main Library is located at the end of the Campus Mall.

Library holdings include, approximately, 600,000 volumes, 6,515 current serials, 21,523 electronic serials, nonprint formats, and rare books.[1]

[edit] Student societies

Tunghai has more than one hundred student societies.

The Wei-Mei Climbing Wall was completed in 2004, in memory of Wei-Mei Lin, a leader of the Mountain Climbing Club, who died in mountain accident in 2001. It is 12 meters high and 9 meters wide. In 2007, the wall burned down. It is now being rebuilt.

In early 2007 it was reported that streams running through and on each side of the campus are also highly polluted and especially noxious during hot weather, and airborne particles of arsenic were recorded at 37.4 nanograms per cubic meter, several times the level considered likely to increase the risk of cancer.
