Earlier Tumsar was facing the severe drinking water crisis but later drinking water from River VainGanga was brought to the town.

Earlier the town was a big market for rice but not so now.

Earlier (before the nationalisation of manganese ore mines in near by area) the town was active residence of big businessmen and rich men of that time who had built the big bungalows and residential complexes. Tumsar is famous for professionals. Saraf brothers made a record at Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. There are many Professional Engineers from the town working in India and abroad. There are very few business / employment opportunities for the people as the town is far away from capital of Maharashra (where there is traditional influence of west maharashtra). There has been negligible development in the area.

There are many places of Pilgrimage nearby such as (1) Gaimukh (shiva temple ) approx 25 km away. (2) Madgi - a very panoramic site in which the temple is situated in the middle of the river Vainganaga (11 km) from Tumsar on Gondia Road.

There is one place in Gaimukh called PARVATI VIVAR (meaning cave house of Goddess Parvati, wife of God Shiva) where there are two tunnels. On for going inside and other for return. The return tunnel is particularly very narow and one can come back only by crawling. It is believed that sinful people will get stuck there. This kind of thing is more difficult compared to that found in Vaishnodevi (i.e Ardh Kumari) and Gufa Mahadev in Panchmadhi.

The area is particularly famous for manufacturing of Beedis by Low Income Group people live on this.

Once, there was a very beautiful lake called Hanuman Tal which had a garden as an island and one access road and surrounded by water with many beautiful lotus flowers all around but gone are those days. Presently, it is in very pitiable condition.

For development, the spot near river Vainganaga at Madgi can be developed as a tourist spot. And also Industrial area can be brought near this which could be near to the railway station.

The name of the town was derived from the name of fish "TUM" which was found here earlier.

The town has a number of lakes. A great town to live peacefully.
