[edit] History
The history of Tuff Shed can be traced back to 1981, when it was founded by the then 21 year old Tom Saurey in Rexburg, ID. The company was formed with a single pickup truck, and a small amount of lumber. By 1987 the company headquarters had relocated to Denver, Colorado and five satellite factories were operational in California, Arizona, and Nevada. A partnership with Home Depot was secured in 2002 in which Tuff Shed would produce a low cost storage building line, known as the Sundance Series. This partnership proved to be very lucrative, creating a substantial increase in revenues and nationwide exposure. In 2003, Tuff Shed had opened its first factories east of the Mississippi River and was officially recognized as the largest (in sales) storage building provider in the United States. Today the company sees continued growth, although recently slowed due to the decline in housing market.
[edit] Products
The Premier Series is the original line of storage buildings offered by the company. This series can be built to custom specifications upon request. The sizes range from garden sheds of 6'x6' to full size garages of unlimited sizes. Some unusual accessories that may be ordered include doggie doors, dutch doors, solar lighting, and retractable skylights. All buildings include a 7 year warranty.
The Sundance Series is a line of storage buildings developed in 2002 which are exclusively available at Home Depot. This series is available is sizes ranging from 6'x6' to 12'x14'. The price is substantially lower than the Premier Series, however the product includes a shorter warranty length (5 years) and lower cost materials are used in production.
[edit] Ad Campaigns
Tuff Shed is perhaps most well know for its unique, and sometimes crude television advertisements. The advertisements typically contain some type of vehicle performing a seemingly dangerous stunt on the building, but causing no damage to the building itself. The purpose obviously being to demonstrate the durability of the building.
In 1999, the reality TV show Real TV featured a segment which showed several structural failures that occurred when filming these commercials. A motorcycle stunt rider was injured when the roof of a shed collapsed as he was driving across it.
