Hi! I don't want to be a wet blanket, but an article about a film that doesn't tell what the film is about...anyway, you get the message. Can you please expand this? Thanks. - Lucky 6.9 23:37, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sterling Airways

Hi Tryggvia! You have added two warning boxes about poor quality standards and confusing text for the Sterling Airlines article, but unfortunately you haven't specified what you think the problems are. As the text in both those boxes state, you should either select boxes that are more specific or specify the problems on the article's discussion page. So, please do so, as it otherwise is very difficult to guess what you react to. Best regards. Thomas Blomberg 12:32, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi again, Trygvia. As you never came back with an explanation for adding the warning boxes, I have now removed them, as I can't see any justification for them. Thomas Blomberg 00:54, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] True north

Hi, Tryggvia. I noticed that you made true north into a disambiguation page. However, I think more people will be expecting to find the original article there than any one of the others, so I think it would be preferable to use the alternative disambiguation style. It is the kind used for steel. The original article would be moved to true north and the disambiguation page would be moved to true north (disambiguation). Then, a link to the disambiguation page would be put at the top of the original article. What do you think? Thanks, Kjkolb 16:42, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tryggvi Gíslason

Hi there. Tryggvi Gíslason has been proposed for deletion. An editor felt this person may not be notable enough for an article. Please review WP:BIO for the relevant guidelines. If you believe this person does meet these criteria, please edit the article to make that more clear and remove the deletion notice. You might consider explaining your reasoning on the talk page.

[edit] Whale

Whaling article. To argue that minke whale is endengered is grossly inaccurate because minke has never been endengered even when the moratorium was imposed. As of fin, it is still listed as endengered though the scientific accuracy of the listing is disputed. So if you want to restore the deleted sentence, please make source attribution. Vapour

Thanks for uploading Image:Rhsteinunnicelandmiss.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. [edit] Piping Icelandic names in Cats

_ _ Contrary to your request, Icelandic last names (with the diacritics & Ð & Þ suppressed, BTW) must be the basis for alphabetizing on Cat pages. We both know that Icelanders are savvy enough to guess what they have to do find their countrymen despite the bloody ignorance of the rest of the world, but the rest of the English-speaking world is too ignorant to rise to the flexibility that you're obviously hoping for, and navigational style on WP is not an acceptable arena for ameliorating that ignorance.
_ _ On the other hand, while Cat piping exists solely to facilitate navigation, and (unless you want to make a crusade for a technique that i'm guessing is feasible tho it it would probably regarded as an innovation requiring discussion, see below) a given article appears only once in a Cat's list of its members, it is quite feasible and IMO desirable to have duplicate entries for the same person in LoPbN. I do not make doing that for Icelandic names one of my priorities, but if anyone questioned your edits, i would throw what weight i can muster on your side. Thich Nhat Hanh is an example of (rdr to) a bio that has two LoPbN entries (and needs at least one each of rdrs and dupe entries), one on List of people by name: Thi and one on List of people by name: Nf-Nh. Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson is IMO the right title for the bio, and the entries for him on LoPbN should include not only one among the Ólafs.../Olafs... names, but also among the Ólafu.../Olafu... and/or Jóh.../Joh... ones. (My ignorance is sufficient that i have no opinion about which.)
_ _ As to the text of the bios, i think it's essential to state what Icelandic usage does with the subject's name, with a lk to the article that explains why. (And as w/ LoPbN, to make full use of the Icelandic characters beyond the English canonical 26.) As to following that subsequent-name-refs usage within the article, i'm not so sure: so far, i think it correct for most people like athletes on teams that regularly play domestically, and politicians who lack diplomatic roles, in contrast to those with international notability, who are probably known by millions abroad and thus may be more notable abroad than at home.
_ _ I think each editor with the background to edit in this area is a really great strength for WP, and i'll be disappointed if you let the ignorance and stubbornness of the rest of the world interfere with your work here!

[edit] Multiple Locations for one Article on Cat Page?

_ _ I've never tried putting two Cat tags in an article, each with different piping. It seems clear that under the simplest implementation of Cats, that would cause two entries in the alphabtical list of members of the Cat. (On the other hand, the implementors may have gone out of their way to forbid it, on the same WP:MOSDAB theory (or at least some editors' determined practice) that IIRC says you can't have two lks to the same article in the same Dab. I believe such a restriction would be unworkable on LoPbN, but i don't mind the inconsistency between the two realms.)
_ _ I can see substantial advantages to Cat dupe tags (perhaps only for bios), but my main misgiving is the prospect of editors learning the practice from seeing examples on bios, and taking license from that to use it in ways that might markedly exacerbate the already somewhat chaotic Cat situation. So i'm unwilling to simply recommend using dupe Cat tags to list articles both by last name and first name for Icelanders. But i'm interested in the idea, now that what i said above brings it to mind. Should we both be thinking about where to raise it? (WP:VP, either Proposals or Technical?)
--Jerzyt 21:21, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Now i've done an experiment by putting double Cat tags into the Sandbox. IIRC, the earlier of two tags for the same Cat seems to control the order in which that Cat is mentioned on the tagged page, but the later one seems to control the placement of a single mention of the page on the Cat page. So trying to cover both orders w/ duplicate tags would require some developer changes. In that light, it occurs to me that the current arrangement supports the convention of Cat tags appearing after the stub tags (and before the inter-language lks, BTW), by ensuring that those putting them near the end "win" when Cat tags are placed at the top or middle of an article and avoiding head-scratching by those who put their tags where they belong. I suppose it's feasible to re-code so that Cat tags separated from the last Cat tag by anything other than whitespace and comments are ignored, and even to ignore tags that are separated from later tags for the same Cat.... Considered in isolation, the nicest solution is to provide for multiple pipe arguments per tag, with each specifying the position of one listing on the Cat for the tagged page's title. Considered in the real world, that idea is in conflict with one of my proposals for cleaning up the mess that results from unexpected effects of relying on the standard collating sequence.

[edit] Coat of arms on Portal:Iceland

Hello Tryggvia, and thank you for contributing to Portal:Iceland. However, I had to revert your recent image change to the intro section (coat of arms). [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Baugur-board-of-directors.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Baugur-board-of-directors.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 11:53, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Silvianight001.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Silvianight001.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. mattbr 10:13, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
