Tryad (also t r y ^ d, t r y Δ d) is an Internet-based musical group that formed in January 2005 (not to be confused with an earlier band of the same name). They are among the first online music collaborations to publish all their works for free download under Creative Commons licenses, and are a prime example of remix culture. Most Tryad members have never met in person.

According to a group press release, Holowach discovered a song that rjmarshall had posted under a Creative Commons license, remixed it, then posted it on his own website. vavrek subsequently found that song and added vocals, which led to the formation of the band. The name 'Tryad' was chosen to represent this original trio.

Although Tryad's members were originally vavrek, rjmarshall, and John Holowach, a number of musicians soon joined the effort including arna, ema, Karen Rustad, Scott Waddell, hisboyelroy, and Steven J. Kukla.

Samples and source instrumentation from a multitude of musicians from all over the world are now featured.

Tryad's first album, Public Domain, was released 3 August 2005. By their own account, the genre is industrial classical pop (though their CD Baby page description lists it as "trip-hop, alt. rock, classical instrumentation, and electronica"). While a CD can be purchased, it can be downloaded at several places, including their home website, tryad.org, and Jamendo [1]; it was also featured on frostclick.com on April 2, 2007.

Tryad released their second album Listen in September 2006, including the work of 20 musicians from all over the globe. This album can be downloaded from Jamendo, tryad.org, or bought from CDBaby, TheAudiobubble, and Amazon. A music video for the song "Breathe" was posted on YouTube to promote it.

Tryad is currently working on their third album entitled 't ^ 3'.
