From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trusham is a small village just outside of Chudleigh between Newton Abbot and Exeter in Devon. It has one pub which claims to be the oldest in Devon named The Cridford Inn.
In the church is a memorial to John Stooke which mentions a charity he set up for the church and the poor of nearby Bovey Tracey. The story, first recorded in 1709, goes that in 1646 an officer in the Royalist army was gambling at Bovey when he was cornered by Roundheads. He threw his bag of winnings to a servant, who threw them over a hedge, where they were found by Stooke, then a humble farmer's boy. Stooke's fortune was founded on his lucky find. Bovey's altar fund still receives a small annual sum from the charity.
A 'black parish' has been reported in the parish and if you come across it you feel as if you are running into something solid. In one of the houses something described as a 'shining golden glory' would sometimes come out of a cupboard. This cupboard was always very damp. The partition which formed the cupboard was removed in the 1930s and nothing unusual has been reported since.
