True north (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
True north can refer to:
- True north in navigation
- "True North", a poetic name for Canada, first used by Alfred Lord Tennyson and popularized by the national anthem "O Canada"
- True North in Evangelical Christian circles is sometimes used to refer to Jesus Christ and the body of knowledge commonly called the gospel. The metaphorical use of True North in these contexts (typically in sermons or in songs) is normally posited against post modernism and the idea that there are no fixed truths in life. Evangelicals are fond of saying that Jesus is like the North Star in that He is a constant reference point which we can always rely on. Therefore, the True North metaphor often is connected to the North Star metaphor with Jesus as the North Star and the gospel as True North. The many time Dove Award Winning songwriter and singer Twila Paris memorialized the True North concept among Evangelicals in the late 1990's with her song and cd titled True North.
