Talk:True Whig Party

The connection with American Whigs is scarcely more than the name. Wetman 00:39, 23 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Is it really the case that the True Whig party -- created in 1878 -- "sold human labour to other colonial powers"? I was under the impression that the British navy had shut down the transatlantic slave trade decades earlier. Who were they selling to? French colonialists in Côte D'Ivoire? As I understand it, the trade was with various Portuguese colonies in Africa, particularly the islands in the Gulf of Guinea. I'll check the source I originally used, as I'm sure it went into some detail. Rather than an actual slave trade, I believe it was the (rather similar) sale of bonded labour; again I will check this. Surely a True Whig is a contradiction in terms... 217.34.39.94 18:21, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
