St. Mary's at Chithurst is a fine example of a Norman church, built around 1080 AD. which has hardly been altered since. Chithurst is the location of Cittaviveka Buddhist Monastery, a monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition of Theravada Buddhism.

The author Thomas Otway was born in Trotton in 1652.
