[edit] Preliminary discussion

The Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma articles are all very exhaustive and well done, but they all need some touching up. If someone could touch them up slightly we can start with them as featured articles, then make a project of editing other pages to near their quality to use as features. The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season page could also be a featured article once the season is over. - Cuivienen 20:52, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Don't forget Hurricane Dennis, that article is really good too. I'm leaning towards Rita but Dennis is a close second, followed closly by Katrina and Wilma. -- Hurricane Eric - my dropsonde - archive 22:32, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, before we do that, we might want to ask for a Peer review of the articles we want to have featured. That said, we need to figure out which one to send to the slaughterhouse first. I propose Hurricane Emily, it's much more stable than the rest of the Terrible Trio. Titoxd(?!? - did you read this?) 00:00, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Until the portal gets off the ground I'd suggest using the featured article as a way to encourage improvement to specific articles: much like an article-of-the-week for the WikiProject would be. Jdorje 02:07, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Well, okay maybe not. There are lots of good stable hurricane articles. However I do think to get the text for the featured article section we should cut-and-paste the introduction for the hurricane article, then wikify the title. If that intro is not sufficient it should be fixed. That's what I did with the andrew article. And nextly, we should probably move this over to Portal_talk:Tropical_cyclones/Featured_article. Jdorje 02:33, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
No need to move it, we can have all the discussion centralized here. Titoxd(?!? - did you read this?) 03:01, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree now. Especially if we adopt a staggered/automated Featured-Article system like the Main Page has. Jdorje 03:14, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

I set up the featured article to rotate automatically each week. The system used is basically the same as what's on the Main Page. However this means we need to actually keep it updated.

I chose Dennis for next week because it's a fairly stable article (since the end-of-season report has been released). Again I just copied the intro in. I think we should plan these articles several weeks in advance and use the time to improve the article quality. I'm not sure when the rollover is, but this means we have several days to fine-tune the Dennis article. We should also have some sort of system for picking the articles (nomination, voting, etc.) Jdorje 17:42, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

I don't really know what you mean. Of course the featured articles section is for featured articles. No, it's not for wikipedia's front-page featured articles: the purpose is so that the portal can have its own featured articles. Yes, the criteria for this portal's featured articles should be the same as for wikipedia featured articles, but we will presumably have to relax the restrictions somewhat to be able to get one featured article per week (52 per yer, 520 per decade...). We also have the possibility of deciding an article should be featured, based on its notability, and then improving that article to be sufficiently high-quality. For the current featured article, I just picked it at random because we needed something to be there; in future we will need a consistent procedure for choosing such articles. Jdorje 04:11, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Tito, featured articles for the tropical cyclones portal don't nessisarily have to be featured articles for all of Wikipedia. 2004 AHS was nominated and I don't see how it didn't win; there were three supports and only one dissenting vote. -- Hurricane Eric - my dropsonde - archive 06:02, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

I picked SSS for week 51 because I figured it was time for a meteorology article, and this is about the only one that's not a stub. Jdorje 01:31, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Nominations

See also the nominations archive at Portal talk:Tropical cyclones/Selected article/Nomination archive.

[edit] September 2006

I would like to nominate Cyclone Rosita sometime soon. It's rather boring looking at Atlantic hurricanes all the time IMO. RaNdOm26 10:07, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
To put in a nomination of my own, I nominate the 1991 Bangladesh cyclone. While not one of the best articles we have (B-Class and small compared to recent FAs), it's one of the best we have on Indian Ocean cyclones (that and Mala). Jake52 My talk 02:58, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Discussion in WPTC's IRC channel indicates we'll do Rosita for next week and 2003 Pacific hurricane season for week after. Sound okay? – Chacor 03:12, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Sounds pretty good to me. LOL RaNdOm26 15:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Which one should be next? Either 1933 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Gustav (2002), List of Delaware hurricanes or List of California tropical storms. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 00:46, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
I vote for List of California tropical storms. It would be a good change in pace. Hurricanehink (talk) 00:49, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] October 2006

Which one should be next? It is also better if we decide several weeks ahead. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 21:15, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, here's the list of tropical cyclone GA, A, and FA class articles that haven't been featured.

Looking at those, and the last few storms we've had, I propose Effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans, then Hurricane Lenny, List of Delaware hurricanes, Typhoon Saomai, Hurricane Philippe (2005), then Tropical Storm Leslie (2000). Hurricanehink (talk) 23:06, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I like the Hurricane Lenny article. I choose that one! RaNdOm26 04:36, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
I made Lenny next, then Vamei. I chose Vamei because it was the orst WPac storm with a good article that I could think of. Make more pages for following weeks, please. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 23:00, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
Since no one made the page for Week 43, I just let Vamei run for another week. We need another five soon. Titoxd(?!?) 01:36, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

I nominate Hurricane Fabian, List of Delaware hurricanes, Typhoon Saomai, Tropical Storm Bill (2003), then Hurricane John (2006). Hurricanehink (talk) 01:53, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November and December 2006

Okay, we're now up to John. We need new ones to run through the end of the year. – Chacor 14:51, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

A possibility might be to follow the idea of our selected pictures and use monthly occurrences, so whatever occurred in December (not all that many!) that meet our criteria could be used? – Chacor 14:55, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

I nominate Hurricane Edith (1971), Hurricane Felix (1995), 1933 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Zeta (2005) (for the new year), and Meteorological History of Hurricane Katrina for now. That'll keep us good until January 7, 2007. Hurricanehink (talk) 20:27, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Apparently someone already prepared a list up to Week 50 of the year (next week), so we need articles for the week of Dec 18 and 25 to cover this year. – Chacor 00:33, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Will put Felix in for Wk 51, and Katrina for Xmas week. – Chacor 10:37, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
To follow up the idea from last year, I propose Hurricane Alice for the New Years week one. Zeta can wait until next year. Hurricanehink (talk) 15:47, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2007

I justed added enough to last until February. I only added those off the top of my head, so sorry if you don't like them, but they're all featured or GA. Hurricanehink (talk) 20:00, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Heh. This is the week of Alice. Good kitty 22:21, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Yea, I didn't realize that until after I did it. :) Hurricanehink (talk) 00:36, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 2008

Well, that was weird. We put all our better articles up for 07 and we're one year in the future when we exhausted them! What articles have been upgraded since then so we can put more up? Jake52 My island 12:31, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Heh, that was a stupid mistake on my part. I have the first five articles of the year chosen. --♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:46, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Here are the articles we have that have not yet been used. If you have a request, you can put it here. Be sure it is somewhat notable and still well-written. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:26, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
