[edit] Input
Wild transmits on BBC TWO Sunday evening at 17.30 for 20 weeks during Autumn/Winter and offers a rich mix of popular wildlife programmes and on going series: Shark Therapy and Diving with Dolphins...with Tanya Streeter Primates and My Life with Animals...with Charlotte Uhlenbroek Elephants and animal/people with Saba Douglas Hamilton Search for Mountain Lions…with Gordon Buchanan Wild Day’s exotic and UK with Wild Florida, Wild Irish Summer and Wild Wensleydale Big Cat Diary – Family Histories Britain’s Wild Places, 10 x 10’ series
Wild has been in production since 2000 and is in its 7th series of commissions with Wild 7 for 06/07 and Wild 8 for 07/08. The new Wild 7 series will start in October 06.
Wild produces 10 x 40 minute originations and 10 x 40 minute reversions/repeats each year. The weekly 40 minute slot can be a 10 minute and 30 minute or a 40 minute programme.Britain’s Wild Places is an extra 10 x 10’ series commission for the mid week 8.50 slot on Wednesday on BBC TWO following on from Natural World.
Funding The budget for a Wild programme is roughly a third of a traditional wildlife programme budget. More recently, Wild programmes have attracted BBC Worldwide investment and some co-production but this cannot be guaranteed. Because of the relative fast speed to delivery Wild programmes are only commissioned if Wild can cover all the costs without being reliant on investment/or co-production.
Audience Wild audience research shows that the Sunday early evening audience are predominantly families and older people who are looking for programmes that are uplifting, escapist, intimate and offer light learning. Programmes that work well manage to enhance the mood of our audience by transporting then to a wildlife place, exotic location or beauty spot in the UK and give them a sense of “being there”. Wild programmes aim to engage with their viewers with strong stories, animal characters that they care about and by creating a sense of "raw reality" the viewer is helped to engage with the programmes such that they feel part of the adventure/experience. Audience research shows that there is a strong core wildlife audience of about 1m plus “dippers” who are often attracted to our Wild programmes that can raise the audience figure up to 3m.
Strategy The Wild commissioning strategy focuses on commissions that strengthen 5-6 mini series or individual presenter's portfolio.
One off’s are only commissioned when we want to pilot new NHU-based presenter in a new format or try out a format without a presenter with the hope and expectation that this pilot programme would naturally develop into a new mini series, or even a series in its own right. All our programmes need to be repeated the following year and sometimes beyond. We therefore tend not to commission very topical or heavy environmental stories that would date quickly or need issues explored in detail.
Wild is constantly looking for new ways to deliver great wildlife at its heart, that meet the needs of the Sunday night audience, and that can be delivered to our smaller budgets and shorter time-scales. Wild is complimentary to Natural World, and is generally more experiential in tone and approach than definitive. Some of the Wild programmes are repeated in the mid week peak-time slots and the Britain’s Wild Places series is performing strongly in the Autumn/Winter 8.50 slot on Wednesday following on from Natural World.
At present, Wildfeatures a wide range of presenters including Bill Oddie, Charlotte Uhlenbroek, Simon King, Jonathan Scott, Saba Douglas-Hamilton, Tanya Streeter and Gordon Buchanan who uniquely bring their expertise to enhance the telling of each wildlife story. Part of WILD’s overall remit is to keep familiar NHU presenters on-screen in between their other series which often have long gestations.
