NedTrain are the locomotive and rolling stock maintenance and repair company of the Dutch Railways company, Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

Always historically part of Nederlandse Spoorwegen, NedTrain's history closely follows that of its parent company and main customer. In the early 1990s under European Union Directive 91/440, which included the need for formal separation of the national railways from Governments and into a two separate companies, one which deals with the infrastructure, and the other which deals with the transport activities; NS was began to be seperated into seperate divisions. NedTrain was formed at this point, not only to comply with the EU Directive and NS's strategy, but also to take advantage of the Dutch Government's desire to create competition in both passnger and frieght transport by offering an "independent" locomotive and rolling stock maintenance and repair facility.
Although much of the reorganisation of NS was reveresed in 2002 when new CEO Karel Noordzij was put in place, and NS being granted by the Dutch Government the sole concession to run on the main passenger lines until 2015, NedTrain had built up enough non-NS business to remain owned by a seperate division of NS.

In October 2006, the Lloyd’s Register Group acquired the 230 employee subsidiary NedTrain Consulting (NTC), the rolling stock Centre of Competence which covers whole life cycle of rolling stock and its systems.[1][2]

NedTrain - Rail Vehicle and Rolling Stock Maintenance and Overhaul Services
Commissioned by Dutch and foreign operators, NedTrain ensures that trains are safe and clean and that they keep on running. NedTrain carries out the maintenance, cleaning and overhaul of rolling stock and the refurbishment and engineering of trains, locomotives, light rail vehicles and components such as traction motors, brake systems, bogies and wheel sets.
NedTrain's role begins with advisory and consultancy services for selecting, designing and building the trains. NedTrain then carries out the maintenance in the succeeding decades guaranteeing an optimal yield. The key issues are innovation and cost management. Hence the slogan: NedTrain, keeping you on track.
ROLLING STOCK AND TRAIN DESIGN AND CONSULTANCY SERVICES
NedTrain is involved right from the initial design phase of a new train, as it will carry out the maintenance and is therefore the definitive expert. The newest technology and systems are included in the design. Thus during maintenance a high level of reliability can be achieved at the lowest possible cost. Once the design of the train is approved, the builder can begin. NedTrain supervises the building process on behalf of the owner. A consultant monitors the production process step-by-step, carrying out tests and inspections for quality control.
Once the building process has been completed, a test run is made. Here again the process is firmly under NedTrain's control. The equipment is first carefully inspected on the outside and then multiple tests are carried out during the test run. NedTrain Consulting is officially recognised by the Ministry for Transport, Public Works and Water Management as a Notified Body. It can therefore approve and admit the train to the rail network if everything is found to be in order.
24/7 TRAIN AND LOCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE
NedTrain provides active and preventative maintenance to trains and locomotives. The rolling stock's performance is continually monitored and improved, striving for the highest possible level of reliability and availability for the lowest possible cost. NedTrain engineers are on standby 24 hours a day to serve the transport operators.
NedTrain does this maintenance outside of rush hours without disturbing the train schedules, facilitating the optimal deployment of rolling stock by the transport operators. Short-term maintenance is carried out at more than 30 locations in the Netherlands. There are exactly enough parts in stock at the central stores for this maintenance. Parts used in a local store are replenished just in time, using an advanced computer system.
COMPLETE ROLLING STOCK OVERHAUL
About halfway through its lifecycle, a train or locomotive is given a complete overhaul. During this major overhaul the rolling stock is inspected from top to toe, parts are repaired or replaced and new, modern technology is installed. As soon as the train enters the workshop the carriages are separated from the bogies. The carriages are then transported in the maintenance sheds on a modern aircushion transportation system. The train is completely overhauled.

NedTrain also sees to it that damaged trains or trains involved in disasters are repaired and can run again as soon as possible. To this end the company has specialised teams and the most modern tools. NedTrain not only repairs physical damage to the train but also deals with all insurance formalities.
