The Trio Fontenay was formed at the Hamburg Conservatory in 1980. The name "Fontenay" is old French for "source" and "fantasy", and is also the name of the street near the Conservatory where the ensemble first met to practice.

The ensemble performs throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia and the Far East. It has recorded for Denon, EMI and Teldec Warner. The ensemble has recorded the Beethoven Piano Trios Op.1/1,Op.1/2 and Op.11 and the complete piano trios of Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Schubert and Dvořák. Members of the Trio Fontenay are Wolf Harden, pianist; Michael Mucke, violinist; and Jens Peter Maintz, cellist.
