[edit] History

The club was first set up in the early nineties as the 'Dublin University Gridiron Society'. It went on to play flag football under the name 'Trinity Thunderbolts' but unfortunately did not last due to lack of numbers and interest. The club was reinstated in 2007 by the now club captain Conor O'Shea as DUAF - Dublin University American Football. The 2008 season had a colorful roster, the main nationality being Irish, but with additions like 4 Americans, 2 Canadians, 1 Frenchman and 1 Norwegian this was to be a team displaying special skills from each country.

[edit] Info

The team trains and plays home games at the Trinity College playing fields in Santry. The current head coach is Darrin O'Toole. The Thunderbolts are currently trying to get official recognition from DUCAC - Dublin University Central Athletic Club but so far attempts have proved unsuccessful.

[edit] Flag League

The Thunderbolts are currently entered in the Irish Flag League as two teams, Trinity Pav and Trinity Buttery. During the first weekend of flag matches for their groups, on February 16, 2008 Trinity Pav beat the Dublin Sharks 25-19 and also beat UCD B 19-6. Trinity buttery however lost to UCD A 6-25. During the second weekend of flag matches for the 2008 season on March 1, 2008, the Pav narrowly beat UCD B 32-26 with a touchdown in the last 12 seconds of the game. However, they then lost to the Dublin Sharks 34-45, leaving them at 3-1. Trinity Buttery won against the Dublin Rebels 40-38 but lost again to UCD A 42-56, leaving them at 1-2.

[edit] 8's League

The Thunderbolts began their inaugural season of fully-kitted football with a game against the Craigavon Cowboys on April 6, 2008. Their second game of the season was also against Craigavon and took place on April 20. The Thunderbolts eventually ended up with a 1-5 record. All losses were close losses, and the type of football played by the Thunderbolts lead to admiration throughout the league and has attracted many top prospects during the offseason.
