Trial and Error is a film released in 1997 by New Line Cinema starring Michael Richards, Jeff Daniels, and Charlize Theron. It is about an attorney's actor friend takes his place in court, defending the boss's hopelessly guilty relative.

[edit] Plot

Charlie Tuttle (Jeff Daniels) is a partner in a successful law firm who is supposed to go to Paradise Bluff, Nevada to request a continuance in a case. But that conflicts with his bachelor's party so his best man, actor Richard Rietti (Michael Richards), drives him out to Paradise Bluff and shows his friend a great time instead. During the night, Charlie gets knocked out in a barfight and gets prescribed some painkillers. The next day (the day of the court appearance), Richard checks on his friend and finds he has taken all of the pills in the bottle. Charlie winds up in no shape to appear in court that day as the representative of Benny Gibbs (Rip Torn), Charlie's boss' hopelessy guilty relative, so Richard impersonates Charlie and the case ends up going to trial with an actor posing as the defendant's lawyer.
