Talk:Tristan und Isolde/Comments
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
B class (70 points). Excellent all round article. Some improvements remain possible:
- Information about recent performance history
- Including in the synopsis the first lines in German of important passages
- Some more illustrations
- Making a complete discography, including historic performances

Rating, points total and comments exactly as per Kleinzach. An additional comment:
- The text could do with some copy-editing, pruning (e.g. why is there a potted synopsis in the lead) and restructuring.

74/100 A comfortable B. To get to GA, I would suggest further reading of WP:WIAGA. Ensuring the lead is a summary and referencing of quotations and opinions are aprticularly important.
- Background/composition/text: 13/15. Excellent. However, I think it should be made more explicit that two of the Wesendonk lieder were musical sketches for Tristan. Gottfried is mentioned as the main source for the poem. Were there others? Also mention that the libretto is a poem.
- Perfomance History: 10/15. I agree that more is needed on recent performance history.
- List of roles: 4/5. I would suggest stating that Tristan is a Mark's Nephew, and Isolde his betrothed. Possibly even give an indication of who is Irish, Cornish or Breton.
- Synopsis: 8/10. I don't know of any indication that Tristan actually murdered Morold. Worth mention that Tristan is so confused at end of Act 1 that he doesn't even know what King Kurwenal is mentioning. Also the interpretation of Tristan's comments on the shepherd's tune and then the following lines in the text are uncertain. I have heard it said that his father died when conceiving him and his mother in childbirth.
- Key arias etc: 2/5. I would want more key points in the score to be identified, including in the synopsis.
- Critical appreciation, discussion of the music 12/15. Good, but I would hope for more discussion about Wagner developing an aptitude for combining motifs including four at a time in Act 3. (It's over a quarter century ago, but I believe the person I heard discuss this was Anthony Negus.) Given the influence on Mahler and Berg et al. is mentioned in the lead, I would expect more in the body of the article on this.
- Recordings: 8/10. An indication of the criteria used to pick recordings would be good. Also how about a mention of recordings of the extracts, particularly the prelude and Liebestod.
- Illustrations 6/10 Good to have musical examples, but I would suggest some more related to points in the text about musical resolution etc. There's also room for a couple of more pictures e.g. the famous cartoon of Wagner and the Bulows as the three protagonists.
Referencing, sources, links etc. 11/15 A good start made, especially compared with the other Wagner articles I've seen. More citation of quotes and opinions needed to go for GA. --Peter cohen 13:21, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
