[edit] Many climbers?
Thanks for adding this page, I'd heard of this knot before but have some concerns regarding the claims made about its actual use as a climbing knot... I did a Google search for "trident loop" and only got one substantive match, and that was a discussion on rec.crafts.knots from 1998 of the knot's relation to other similar loops/bends. If this knot were used by "many climbers" I would think that there would be multiple mentions of it, somewhere, on some climbing/caving sites or forums. The only knot reference I've been able to find this in is Budworth's Complete Book of Knots (1997) and it states only that the knot was "cautiously proposed as an alterative to the figure-eight" loop. Admittedly this book was published almost 10 years ago, but if it was widely used now I'd expect a much higher-profile in searches. Are there any climbing references which actually recommend this knot?
And just as an aside, whatever its actual performance characteristics, it seems to me there are many possible wrong ways to tie it and it is difficult to visually inspect (compared to the figure-eight loop) to verify it is correct. --Dfred 17:53, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- I will try to find my source... it's from a book I had a long time ago. Since I learned the knot, I have talked to climbers who know about the knot, and because of the risks you mentioned, do not use it. If I can't find the book, then perhaps your Budworth book would suffice, and we can remove the comments about usage in climbing.Carlco 20:51, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- I reworked the lead to reflect the info I have on it. It alludes to its proposed use for climbing, but with so many unknowns and possible risks I'm hesitant to leave too strong an indication that it is used regularly by climbers until there's more supporting information. --Dfred 19:41, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
In my Firefox browser I'm getting an overlap of images between the main image and the image for Step 4. [jeh, Sept 25, 2007] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.107.141.180 (talk) 21:54, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
