[edit] Merging from pointed gourd

I'm not adamant about merging, but it does seem that much of the information about Trichosanthes dioica is likely to be applicable to its relatives, and might be better off in the genus. Then, if moving this information results in a very small species article, it might be better to merge. โ€” Pekinensis 20:10, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Members of the family

Snake gourd or serpent gourd is variusly known in India (e.g., in Bengal it is called Chichinga) while pointed gourd is called potol there and parwal in North India. The site [1] shows pictures of all the varieties available worldwide. The page on Trichosanthes may be made into a Redirection page with links pointing to snake gourd and pointed gourd. Hi Supten! Sorry for my delay in responding. I was confused at first by your comments. Although I have been a customer of Evergreen Seeds for more than a decade, and also use their website as an information source, surely they do not sell all the varieties available worldwide. ;ยท)
I was most confused by your use of the common names, but eventually understood that you are using "snake gourd" to refer to T. cucumerina and "pointed gourd" to refer to T. dioica, and that this use is supported by authorities [2]. I had understood "snake gourd" as a generic term (like the equivalent term in Chinese), which made your comments difficult to interpret. My mistake.
A redirection page cannot point to more than one target. Do you mean a disambiguation page? I believe that the genus Trichosanthes deserves its own article, with information that goes beyond disambiguation but of course includes links to the individual species.
My proposal was to merge your single-species article into the genus article, with the idea that much of that article's information was more generally applicable to the other species in the genus. However, on reconsideration, I believe I was mistaken. The status quo is fine.

[edit] Disambiguation

Actually I am not very familiar with the Botanical names, but like to eat all the varieties available in India. You are right about disambiguation page. Can you please reformat the Trichosanthes page and make either subsections for the varieties or make an Also See section and put links to the individual items. Then the separate species may be dealt with in different pages. Supten 05:11, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

I have split off a separate article for the serpent gourd, as per your request. โ€” Pekinensis 15:43, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your efforts. Will it be possible to upload some images for better description of all the articles? Supten 07:36, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
