[edit] Centralized video game navbox discussion

You previously expressed a strongly-stated opinion about a video game navbox or all video game navboxes in general, or perhaps I clicked on your talk page by mistake. [edit] Tango Mike Foxtrot

I can not express how nice it is to encounter another editor who is willing to engage in a discussion before making a decision, as you did on the AfD where we discussed WP:CCC. It seems like 7 times out of 10 when someone asks why/why not a policy applies the question is rhetorical at best. I almost always find myself saying "This is actually a question, not sarcasm" before a lot of mine to increase the odds of an answer. [edit] Captain panda

You have asked me why I am called "Captain panda" and now I will answer. My name is original and made up by me. It was inspired when I played a game in WarCraft III called DotA. My character was a panda. I did not do particularly good in that game, but I had a lot of fun anyways. I had so much fun, I decided to change my username on WarCraft III. The name "Captain panda" (actually, in WarCraft III it is spelled captain_panda) just popped into my head. I like to have uniform username on all online things so that I won't forget my username. For this reason, my Wikipedia account is "Captain panda" as well. Captain panda In vino veritas 02:45, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please take another look

Hi TBC,

After you contributed to the deletion discussion on the Helen Hollick article, the author herself put some references on the deletion page, and I think we now have adequate confirmation of notability from independent sources. I initially voted to delete myself, but I've been working with her to improve the page with more footnotes and more information. At this point I think the article is worthy of keeping, and I'm continuing to work on it with her. Please take another look at the page and consider whether you'd like to change your vote. Thanks! [edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Burnheir.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Burnheir.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 06:54, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] VH1 Ownership

In the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Spongebong Hemppants page the following question was posed by User:tregoweth stating, "Doesn't Viacom own VH1 too?" your response was "'I don't think so, since Viacom was seperated into two different companies a few years ago". For your information VH1 is a service of MTV Networks which in turn is a subsidary of the newly established Viacom, While it is true that Viacom split, MTV Networks including MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, and TVLand and Paramount Pictures (Except for TV Distribution) was retained as part of Viacom while the CBS Television Network it's distribution arm CBS-Paramount Television Distribution, CBS Distribution International and CBS Radio were spun off to a separate company. [edit] A very Californian RfA thanks from Luna Santin

Thanks for your support in my not-so-recent RfA, which succeeded with a final tally of (97/4/4)! I've never been able to accept compliments gracefully, and the heavy support from this outstanding community left me at a complete loss for words -- so, a very belated thank you for all of your kind words.

I have done and will continue to do the utmost to serve the community in this new capacity, wherever it may take me, and to set an example others might wish to follow in. With a little luck and a lot of advice, this may be enough. Maybe someday the enwiki admins of the future will look back and say, "Yeah, that guy was an admin." Hopefully then they don't start talking about the explosive ArbComm case I got tied into and oh what a drama that was, but we'll see, won't we?

Surely some of you have seen me in action by now; with that in mind, I openly invite and welcome any feedback here or here -- help me become the best editor and sysop I can be.

Again, thank you. –Luna Santin

Kicking ass. Taking names. Biting trees. A simple philosophy I should hope anyone could live by. :) I didn't quite make it to WP:100, as you mentioned, but I was blown away by the sheer amount of support I got from the community. [edit] 2012's deletion

Yeah, I know it can be a bit of a pain. But the revised notability guideline for future films is there for very good, practical reasons. So many factors such as budget issues, scripting issues, and casting issues can interfere with a project well ahead of its intended filming date. And we've seen so many projects fall by the wayside at the last minute that it's the only way of ensuring that this place doesn't get clogged with stubby articles about films which were never made and thus would ultimately fail the general notability guideline. Even high-profile ones which have got a greenlight. Just look at those which were postponed, even shelved indefinitely, because of the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, including the very high profile Justice League film, Pinkville, Johnny Depp's Shantaram among many others. It's not just those affected by the strike; Jurassic Park IV, which many would consider a no-brainer for a speedy greenlight, was supposed to be released in 2005. We don't even have a separate article for The Hobbit film yet. This annoys some people. :) Anyway, all the best, and thanks for understanding. Steve TC 16:36, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] String-Man hoax/vandalism

It's nothing to do with being an expert on comics. No comics knowledge is required to compare two articles. You claim that "the text wasn't directly lifted off of the Spider-Man article" and thus isn't vandalism. Let's examine that statement a bit further, using examples from the articles:

  • Spider-Man article: "J. Jonah Jameson – The irascible publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper. While he employs Peter Parker as a photographer, he is also Spider-Man's greatest critic and largely responsible for public distrust of the hero."
  • String-Man article: "Stuart Nicklen – The irascible publisher of the The Whitefield newsletter. He is String-Man's greatest critic and largely responsible for public distrust of the hero."

And here's another:

  • Spider-Man article: "Spider-Man's most infamous and dangerous enemies are generally considered to be the Green Goblin,[34] Doctor Octopus, and Venom. ... As with Spider-Man, the majority of these villains' powers originate with scientific accidents or the misuse of scientific technology, and they tend to have animal-themed costumes or powers."
  • String-Man article: "String-Man's most infamous and dangerous enemies are generally considered to be the Red Devil ... QuadArms and Vermin. ... As with String-Man, the majority of these villains' powers originate with scientific accidents or the misuse of scientific technology, and they tend to have animal-themed costumes or powers."

It's extremely obvious that the content was simply cut-and-pasted (again, a GFDL violation) then altered to varying degrees. The icing on the cake is that the String-man article in at least 3 cases the writer forgot to change the text and left "Spider-Man" in!

Part of the reason hoaxes and vandalism so often gain a foothold, in some cases lasting for years, is when longtime editors who really should know better go out of their way to defend such things with only the barest of reasoning for doing so. Andrew Lenahan - Starblind 17:50, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Again, I'm not trying to defend an article that obviously should be deleted. I never wanted to give you that impression. Just saying that, at first glance, I didn't consider it a "blatant" hoax, which I typically associate with patent nonsense. I still strongly support deleting it. It's only a mere semantics issue and I'm not trying to debate with you or anything. Though I did find your response on my talk a bit biting and maybe not as civil as you might have intended, hopefully we can resolve this little kerfluffle between us.--TBC!?! 22:07, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
