Trent McCleary

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trent Kenneth McCleary (born September 8, 1972 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian professional hockey player who played for the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League.

McCleary's career was tragically cut short after a freak incident during a home game on January 29, 2000. While attempting to block a shot by Philadelphia Flyers player Chris Therien, he was accidentally struck in the throat by the flying puck. The injury was so severe than an emergency tracheotomy had to be performed at the Molson Centre, a procedure that saved his life[1]. Several surgeries were required before he could regain his speech. He now has a 15% narrower air passage due to a partially paralyzed left vocal cord and scar tissue on the cricoid cartilage in his throat.
