[edit] Production
In August 2005, following the post-production of his The New World, director Terrence Malick entered talks with Mumbai-based Percept Pictures Co. to write and direct Tree of Life.[4] The film had been a project developed on and off by Malick for the past 30 years.[5] Actor Colin Farrell was originally in talks to be cast in one of the lead roles, and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki was expected to return after his work with Malick for The New World. Pre-production was scheduled to begin in January 2006.[4] A third of filming was planned to take place in India. Tree of Life did not begin production immediately, and Farrell eventually departed from the project. River Road Entertainment replaced Percept Pictures Co. in financing the film, and actors Sean Penn and Heath Ledger were involved in talks in October 2007 to be cast.[6] By the following December, Brad Pitt was cast to replace Ledger who dropped out, and Penn remained attached in a supporting role for the film.[3] Production is aided by production designer Jack Fisk, who has done research for the film at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.[5]
Filming began in Texas.[2] Locations include Smithville, Houston, Matagorda,[7] Bastrop, Austin[8], and Malick's hometown of Waco.[9]
The namesake of the film is a large live oak tree that was excavated from property a few miles outside Smithville. The 65,000 pound tree and root ball was trucked into Smithville and replanted.[10]
