Treaty of Salbai
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Treaty of Salbai was signed on May 17, 1782 between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company after long negotiations. Based on the terms of the accord, the company maintained its control of Salsette and acquired guarantees that the Marathas would defeat Hyder Ali of Mysore and retake territories in the Carnatic. Moreover, the Marathas would guarantee that the French be prohibited from establishing settlements on their territories. In return, the British agreed to pension off their protégé, Raghunath Rao, and acknowledge Madhav Rao Narayan as peshwa of the Maratha Empire. Also, the British recognized the territorial claims of the Sindhia west of the Jumna River. The Treaty of Salbai, overall, maintained peace between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company up until 1802.[1]
